Nutritionist Warns Against Sale Of Expired Foods
A food scientist and
nutritionist, Mrs Florence James, says the sale and consumption of expired foods is capable of causing health hazards.
James said this in an interview with tnewsmen in Port Harcourt while speaking on the dangers of eating expired foods.
She said that the intake of such foods were responsible for diseases like liver and kidney failures in the society.
“Many people develop sicknesses from the kind of foods they eat. Expired foods can no longer nourish the body but cause sickness.
“People should always check expiry dates of all canned foods before eating them because some sellers are either very wicked or ignorant,’’ the nutritionist said.
James urged agencies like the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to rise up to the challenges, to save lives.
She said that it was proper to devise ways of protecting the innocent and unsuspecting consumers.
The nutritionist urged the Federal Government to devise other means of safeguarding the lives of the citizens, which was sacrosanct.
She advised food marketers to always check their stock weekly to avoid sale of expired or fake foods to consumers.
James called for the inauguration of a task force on food surveillance, adding that this would combat the sale of expired foods to consumers.
