NEMA Assesses Landslide In Bayelsa Community
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has begun the assessment of the landslide in Sabagreia, a coastal community in Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
The disaster which was reported on March 2, destroyed eight buildings along the river bank, rendering many families homeless.
“We are aware of the landslide that occurred in Sabagreia; we have responded, and as I speak to you, our men are on ground in the community to assess the situation,’’ NEMA’s South-South Coordinator, Mr Umesi Emenike, told newsmen in Yenagoa.
A resident of the community, Miss Mercy Odafia, said that the landslide swept more than eight houses along the river bank, adding that no life was lost.
“The slide really shocked the people because I personally have never seen a thing like this. It destroyed over eight homes, sending many people along the waterside running for safety,’’ she said.
Odafia said that the landslide rendered many people homeless, while many of them had sought shelter with relations.
Meanwhile, residents of the Okoloba community in the affected LGA have called for assistance.
It would be recalled that the community which was flooded 2012, experienced a similar landslide three years ago.
Some of the victims who narrated their ordeal, said that they had been rendered homeless, and called for shoreline protection projects to stop the catastrophe.
Chief Odonbilo Tamuno, from Isedani compound in Okoloba, who narrated the ordeal, said the incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Saturday.
“Some of us are attributing it to recent flood. We know we are living along the banks of River Nun but what has just happened to us is a serious issue.
“A proper piling and reclamation of land will go a long way to take care of this problem facing the community.
“The water current needs to be diverted through well planned shoreline protection project.
He appealed for assistance from government and non-governmental organisations.
Mrs. Ikisa Bansika, another victim, observed that no assistance had come their way since the incident occurred.
