NYCN Empowers 1,250 In Delta
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) chairman in Delta State, Mr Hope George, said that the council had commenced skills training programme for 1,250 youths in the state. George told newsmen in Asaba that 50 of the benefitting youths were selected from each of the 25 Local Government Areas in the state.
He said that the youths would be trained in shoe making, soap making, tailoring, hair dressing, traffic control, bead making, paint manufacturing, mobile telephone repairs and computer appreciation.
The chairman said that the council started the programme in November 2012 in Burutu, where it trained 50 youths in computer literacy for three weeks.
He said that at the end of the3 training, the NYCN gave the trainees materials to enable them set up small business centres. George said that more trainees would graduate from the scheme before the end of the first quarter of 2013, adding that NYCN would also provide them with starter packs. He explained that the essence of the programme was to ensure that the youths were meaningfully engaged to “drastically reduce youth restiveness in the state”.
He said that the council would carry out an enlightenment programme across the state to create awareness on the empowerment scheme. According to him, most youths are yet to appreciate the importance of skill acquisition. “Gone are the days when people relied on white-collar jobs. There is no way the government can employ everybody. “One of the ways to fight the challenge of unemployment plaguing in the society today is through skill acquisition,’’ he said.
