Bayelsa To Take Over Church Project
Bayelsa State Government, is to take-over the construction
of late Rev. Ogriki Ockiya Memorial Church Project in Nembe as a mark of
recognition for the foremost Ijaw religious leader.
Reverend Ockiya, an Anglican cleric, was said to have been
the first man to translate the Bible in to Nembe Language.
Governor Seriake Dickson disclosed this while responding to
requests made by a delegation of the church project, who paid him a courtesy
call at Government House, Yenagoa.
Governor Dickson noted that the decision was in line with
his administration’s Ijaw History project through which government intends to
sponsor research into the lives and achievements of Ijaw heroes whose works
have impacted positively and contributed to the promotion of Ijaw culture.
The governor described late Rev. Ogriki Ockiya as a foremost
Ijaw icon whose services did not only transcend the church but also deepened
the study of Ijaw language and culture generally.
Governor Dickson, who further acknowledged late Ockiya as
the first to translate the Bible to any Ijaw language, pledged to partner with
the Church to properly immortalise the departed cleric.
Accordingly, the governor directed the chief historian and
archivist of the state to raise a team that will study and write about the life
and contributions of the late Anglican priest.
While urging the church to take the decision on where the
project should be sited, Governor Dickson promised that the project would be
completed in no distant time.
He appreciated the church and the Nembe people for
sacrificing their resources towards the immortalisation project and asked the
Deputy Governor, Retired Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah to co-ordinate
consultations on the project to enable government put up a befitting edifice in
memory of the departed hero.
Speaking earlier, spokesman for the delegation, Sir Bio
Ibogomo Gbeyasa stated that the project which is expected to cost N250million
will not only be a memorial edifice but also serve as a unifying factor for the
Nembe people.
Sir Gbeyasa commended the governor for his purposeful
leadership style, and requested government to construct the road leading to the
proposed site of the project.
