Edo Police Seek Journalists’ Support To Fight Crime
The Edo State Police Command is to collaborate with the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to fight crime, the state’s new Commissioner of Police, Mr Olayinka Balogun, said on Tuesday.
Speaking to newsmen in Benin, the commissioner said that a committee would soon be set up to make the council to work hand in hand with the police toward information-sharing.
He urged newsmen to support the efforts of the command in information-sharing and to show commitment to the rule of law at all times.
Balogun charged officers and men of the command to be civil in their dealings with members of the public.
“The policemen are to fight crime and to protect the public. I will, therefore, improve on the existing strategies to achieve a better result”.
The commissioner said that the police could resort to raiding of some areas in the state if necessary but allayed fears of unlawful arrest and detention, assuring that whoever was found innocent after thorough screening would be set free.
He said that every police station would be mandated to have three telephone lines to bridge the gap between the public and the police in information flow.
He said that one of the lines would be for the Divisional Police Office, the second line for the police orderly and the third for the counter at the station.
“The current state of security in Nigeria is of great concern to all Nigerians. The new leadership of the police is prepared to take the bull by the horns to rid the society of crime and criminality.
“The police’s commitment to duty, dedication to duty, respect for the rule of law, fairness to all in the discharge of their duties, honesty in the course of discharging duties and performance of duty without fear or favour will help in fighting crime,’’ he stated.
Balogun also advised private guards to shun commercial activities while on duty to enable them have full concentration on their jobs, saying that criminals often gained easy access into homes because of a lack of concentration on the part of those paid to provide security.
“A man is his own chief security officer. We must try to know what is happening around us,” he stated.
