‘FG Won’t Be Intimidated By Strike Threats’
The Federal Government says that it will not be stampeded by any group or association into taking unnecessary actions.
President Goodluck Jonathan made the statement at the 37th convocation ceremony of the University of Benin in Edo.
Jonathan, who is the visitor to the institution, was represented by the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa.
The President said that while government was not unmindful of the challenges facing the education sector, the administration would not succumb to threats and intimidation from associations or groups to take decisions that would be inimical to the sector.
Jonathan warned that the government would not fold its arms and watch those he referred to as mischief makers disrupt the academic system.
He said that parents and stakeholders must assist government to create the enabling environment for academic growth, adding that government was committed to ensuring that peace and harmony reigned in the education sector.
The Chancellor of the institution, who is also the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Muhammadu Musdafa, expressed worry over the academic distrust by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“As royal fathers, we strongly appeal to the national leadership of ASUU and the Federal Government to take the path of sincere dialogue and openness in order to peacefully resolve the points of dispute now threatening the stability of the universities.
“It is imperative that all stakeholders critically assess the prevailing situation in our country and make concerted efforts to stave off actions that could aggravate national threat.
“We cannot at this time force thousands of our youths in all the public universities to be idle at home and in the society with the tendency of increasing social upheavals and insecurity.”
The chancellor added that the government and private sector must find ways to collaborate to fund and provide the enabling environment to encourage educational services.
