277 Communities In C’River Benefit From Sanitation Programme
About 277 communities in Cross River have benefited from Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach in the state, to enhance sanitation and hygiene practices, the Deputy Governor, Mr Efiok Cobham, has said.
Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is a revolutionary approach which began in 2008 to empower communities to take a collective action to stop open defecation.
Mr Cobham told newsmen in Calabar that the affected communities received the sanitation interventions through CLTS in collaboration with the Federal Government, the EU, UNICEF and the state government.
“Out of this number, 121 communities as well as eight council wards are now Open Defecation Free (ODF),
“Yakurr Local Government Area is on the verge of becoming the first ODF Local Government Area in the state.
“These achievements were recorded between late 2008 and 2010 since the piloting and scaling-up of CLTS in the state.
“This success rate has remained unprecedented and points to the efficacy of the CLTS strategy.
“For us in Cross River, sanitation promotion, apart from its attendant health benefits, is vital to the strengthening of the state’s tourism development efforts’’, he said.
“We will be adopting CLTS as a major sanitation promotion strategy and a key entry strategy for all government interventions through all ministries, departments and agencies within the sanitation sector.
“I wish to call on all Local Government Chief Executives across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state to begin to prioritise sustainable actions towards making their council areas Open Defecation Free,’’ the deputy governor said.
He added that the state government had inaugurated sanitation ambassadors to heighten mobilisation for sustainable sanitation improvement.
