Bird-Flu Control: Ministry Verifies Samples

The Veterinary Department of the Rivers State Ministry of Agriculture has so far forwarded over 75 tracheal and cloacal samples to the National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, Plateau State for verification.

The Desk Officer, Avian Influenza Control Programme, State Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Allswell Emejuru said the essence of the sample collection was to disinfect all live birds markets in Rivers State.

“A poultry market is an avenue of spreading infection, that is the reason for the on-going disinfection of markets”, he said.

According to him, the disinfection of live birds markets which is being carried out fortnightly were taken from water fowls, sick birds, dead birds and all wild birds in the market.

“Live birds markets were these samples were taken are Mile 3, Creek Road, Rumuokrushi, Trans Amadi, Oil Mill and Bori markets respectively”, he added.

Dr. Emejuru further disclosed that the federal government has donated mobile communication equipment to the veterinary department of the ministry for public enlightenment on Avian influenza.

He advised owners of live bird markets and the public not to panic but to cooperate with the veterinary department to carry out the disinfection of the markets in order to ensure bird flu-free-state.

US Approves New Drug To Delay Type 1 Diabetes

A new drug that delays the onset of type 1 diabetes received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.
It is the first therapy approved for prevention of type 1 diabetes.
The monoclonal antibody teplizumab, which will be marketed under the brand name Tzield, from ProventionBio and Sanofi is given through intravenous infusion. The therapy will carry a wholesale cost of roughly $194,000 for a full course of treatment, the drug’s manufacturer said in an investor call on Friday, although this is not expected to be the price consumers would pay.
It is thought to work by turning down the body’s misdirected attack on its own insulin-producing cells. The idea is that protecting these cells buys people more time before they become dependent on insulin to manage their condition.
In clinical trials, Tzield delayed progression to full-blown diabetes by a little over two years. But the benefits have lasted much longer in some of the study participants.
One of them, Mikayla Olsten, was screened for diabetes after her 9-year old sister, Mia, suddenly developed a life-threatening episode of diabetic ketoacidosis and was diagnosed with diabetes. There was no history of diabetes in the family, and Mikayla was not sick, but she had four of the five types of autoantibodies that doctors look for to assess a person’s risk.
“They told us when somebody has that many markers, it’s not if they’re going to develop diabetes, it’s when,” said her mom, Tracy.
Mikayla was 15 when she joined the study and received teplizumab. She is now 21 and a senior in college. She gets an annual battery of tests to check her pancreas and blood markers, and Tracy Olsten says her condition has not progressed in six years.
According to a scientific statement from JDRF, the Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association, when a person has markers for autoimmune disease and episodes of uncontrolled blood sugar, the five-year risk for progression to insulin-dependent symptomatic disease is 75 percent. The lifetime risk of developing insulin-dependent diabetes is nearly 100 percent.

Using Watermelon To Control Fat

A new study has revealed that watermelon can help in controlling fat from consuming western diets. The study was published in Journal of Nutrition.
It claims that watermelon intake has visible effects on blood pressure regulation along with other health benefits. Even consuming watermelon frequently as a dessert, fruit salad and in garnishing drinks could remediate metabolic complications that come with junk foods and a Western-style diet high in fat.
Experts, in a new study, said supplementing a diet high in fat with watermelon as a dessert, fruit salad and in garnishing drinks diet improved fasting blood glucose, circulating insulin concentrations in the blood, and changes in liver metabolite accumulation.
Even with a modest level of supplementation, the fiber-rich additives further improved glucose breakdown and energy efficiency. It was in the March 2020 edition of the Journal of Nutrition.
Watermelon is an unusual fruit source of the lycopene and an excellent source of water. It contains unusual amounts of the amino acids and citrulline. Also, watermelon is an excellent source of immune-supportive vitamin C and vitamin A (9.0 mg), potassium (11.2 mg) and magnesium (10.2 mg).
Lots of evidence shows that it can be effective for weight loss because of its fewer quantities of fats. As a result, the consumption of watermelon provides long-term health benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease, improved blood pressure in hypertension patients and decrease low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation.
The researchers had assessed the intake of watermelon in high-fat–fed male mice. Ten-week-old male mice were provided either a low-fat diet or a high fat diet with watermelon skin or watermelon skin and rind were added at 2.25 per cent of diet. Body weights, food intake and glucose tolerance were determined.
The final body weight of the low fat control group was significantly lower than that of the high fat-fed control group.
Mice in treatment groups fed high fat supplemented with watermelon products had final body weights similar to those of the high fat-fed control mice.
Insulin concentrations in the blood were reduced by approximately 40 per cent in mice fed a high fat diet with watermelon rind supplementation compared with mice fed a high fat diet alone. Depending on the individual species or group, microbiome populations changed significantly.
Moreover, in another study researchers had corroborated the antidiabetic potential of watermelon juice in alloxan-induced diabetic rats and declared that its juice may have a useful clinical application in the management of diabetes mellitus and its metabolic complications if de- veloped as adjuvant therapy.
It was in the April 2020 edition of the Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders.
Diabetes was induced in the rats and these animals were randomly grouped into five groups of normal control, untreated diabetic control, diabetic rats administered 200 mg/kg body weight of metformin, diabetic rats administered 500 mg/kg body weight of watermelon juice and diabetic rats administered 1000 mg/kg body weight of watermelon juice.
The rats were sacrificed on the 14th day of the experiment and various parameters were also evaluated in their blood and body tissues.
