The Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Ukel Oyaghiri, has called on the management of Total E&F to organise a re-orientation for women of the South-South geo-political zone of the country.
Mrs Oyaghiri made the call on the occasion of the 2018 Women’s Day celebration organised by Total E&P, a multinational oil exploring firm, for women from its host communities in the South-South region in Port Harcourt last week.
Addressing the congregation, the commissioner said while the idea behind skills acquisition exercise is commendable, it will be more rewarding to encourage the women have a better orientation about the whole idea.
Narrating her experience about women’s attitude towards the skills acquisition programmes over time, she said, “I have noticed that after educating the women in skills acquisition exercise, they are quick to sell off their starter packs at the gate”.
While she condemning the act, she enjoined the women to always develop a mental picture of what they want to make out of the skills acquired, rather than contemplating on how to make brisk business from what they expect to be empowered with.
She maintained that women ought to have something with which to better their lives, pointing out that they need to move with the time.
Meanwhile, Mrs Oyaghiri also used the occasion to educate women on the availability of law on domestic violence in the state and the need to explore it by breaking the culture of silence when violated.
She encouraged those who cannot fight their cause to take their case to the Ministry of Women Affairs or the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Port Harcourt.
