Football enthusiasts in Enugu at the weekend hailed the home-based Super Eagles for their 2-1 victory over the Squirrels of Republic of Benin in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.
Nigeria defeated their Republic of Benin 2-0 in Kano with a 2-1 aggregate to secure a ticket to the African Nations Championship in Kenya in 2018.
The first leg had ended 1-0 in Cotonou in favour of the Squirrels.
Some of the fans who spoke to newsmen in Enugu said that qualifying for the competition had been done and dusted but warned that the team needed improvement before the tournament proper.
Rangers’ spokesman Foster Chime praised the team’s goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, for saving Nigeria from more disgrace.
“Although I did not watch the match but I learnt that the goalkeeper saved a penalty that would have ended the match 2-1.
