The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo has advised women, especially young girls against indulging in illicit sex and abortion, stressing that it was injurious to their health and Christian belief.
Banigo, who gave the advice during an advocacy visit by the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) at Government House, Port Harcourt, also said family planning, as an integral part of reproductive health, should be given adequate attention by healthcare workers.
The deputy governor enjoined health workers to identify the barriers in achieving effective family planning in the state.
”You should encourage women, particularly young girls that abortion is dangerous to their health, sex outside marriage is bad. It leads to soul tie that will eventually destroy lives,” Banigo declared.
The deputy governor urged healthcare providers to ensure zero transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child because, as she puts it, there is no justification for any child to contact HIV when there were cost effective measures to prevent the scourge from spreading to the innocent child.
Banigo commended PPFN for its voluntary services, and assured the federation of the state government’s partnership towards providing quality, accessible and affordable healthcare services for the people of the state.
Earlier, the state Chairperson of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, Rivers State branch, Mrs. Boma Opirite Peter-Kio, had said the federation was a leading and largest volunteer-based non-governmental organization involved in sexual reproductive health and rights, including family planning.
She stated that a total of 192,877 women and 62,905 men in the state were provided with quality family planning services in 2015, and appealed to the state government to reintroduce annual subvention to the body.
