PoS Transactions: Traders Lament Telecommunication Failure
Some traders in Lagos yesterday said that the use of the Point of Sales (PoS) terminals was being hampered by telecommunications network failure.
They told newsmen in separate interviews that they were always cautious so as to avoid multiple charges on their accounts.
Also, our correspondent, who visited Apongbon, Balogun, Oyinbo and Mushin markets, reports that the traders said that the network failure often delayed transactions.
Mrs Ijeoma Fidelis, a trader at Apongbon market, said that traders were being discouraged from using the PoS terminals because of multiple charges as accounts were sometimes debited twice for one transaction.
He advised government to aggressively address the network hitches for the success of the scheme.
“The ability of CBN to address the network challenge to boost connectivity will impact positively on the policy,’’ he said.
Another trader in the market, Mr Johnson Udochukwu, said that charges for using the PoS were often not explicitly stated in banks’ statements.
“The charges are not explicit enough for us to understand,’’ he said.
Udochukwu said that the challenges arising from implementing the cash-less policy could discourage people from embracing it fully.
He therefore advised the apex bank to address these challenges so that business transactions could be faster with the PoS terminals.
Mr Victor Nwosu, a trader at Mushin market, advised the apex bank to overhaul the banking infrastructure to encourage the use of the PoS terminals.
He said that the new policy was capable of growing the nation’s economy, reduce the stress of carrying large amounts of money around and curb robbery attacks.
Nwosu also advised banks to be more transparent in the charges to enhance public confidence in the policy.
“The inability of banks to notify customers about transactions on their accounts in record time was discouraging many traders from using the terminals,’’ Nwosu said.
