‘Nigeria Spends N9bn On Foreign Artisans Yearly’
The President of Nigerian In
stitute of Building (NIOB), Mr Tunde Lasabi, has said that the nation spends about N9 billion annually on hiring foreign artisans to work in the country.
Lasabi told newsmen in Lagos that the artisans were paid to work on various construction sites.
According to him, most contractors and building professionals preferred to use the services of artisans and craftsmen from neighbouring countries because of the good quality of their work.
“The building industry is depleting the nation’s foreign reserve by hiring the services of foreign artisans and craftsmen.
“We know that this is not good enough but for now there is nothing we can do.
“However, to check this, the institute decided to train and retrain our indigenous artisans and craftsmen and we have just completed the first phase of the training.
“This is a remarkable achievement for the institute in the first quarter of 2014,” he said.
Lisabi said that the training would help to put the work of Nigerian artisans and craftsmen at par with those of their colleagues outside the country.
He added that the capacity building programme would also ensure employment for Nigerian artisans and craftsmen on construction sites.
The NIOB president said that the programme would be continuous as it was also aimed at checking the rate of building collapse.
He said that the industry had more of aged artisans and craftsmen who could provide quality work on site like their foreign counterparts.
According to him, the industry needs younger artisans and craftsmen who will replace the aging ones.
“The young artisans and craftsmen are emergency workmen who come into the profession because there is no other alternative,’’ he said.
Lasabi said the institute desired that the training would encourage youths and help them to imbibe a love for construction work so that they could do it better.
Our correspondent reports that members of NIOB manage the production process of the building on site and the supervision of artisans and craftsmen rest on their shoulders.
