PHALGA Presents Starter Packs To 250 Skills Acquisition Trainees
The Port Harcourt City Local Government Council has presented starter packs worth millions of naira to 250 graduands of its third batch skills acquisition programme.
The presentation was made during the graduation ceremony of the Third Batch of trainees of the Port Harcourt City Entrepreneurship Trades And Skills Development Programme.
It would be recalled that over 1,200 indigenes and non-indigenes of the city, mostly youths, have benefitted from the programme since its inception two years ago.
Areas of focus as far as the training was concerned are solar inverter installation, paint making and Application, scaffolding, and rigging.
Other areas are forklift operation, air-conditioning and refrigeration, GSM and computer repairs, basic welding, shoe making, fashion and designing, cookery, baking, snacks and pastries, makeup, gele, editing l, and hair styling and nail fixing.
Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, Sir Alwell Ihunda, said the entrepreneurship, trades and skills development programme was needed to redirect the minds of the people from being despondent job seekers to becoming self employed folks who can stop worrying about how their next meal would come.
According to Sir Ihunda, “self employment gives comfort and brings pride to the heart of those who are able to learn the skills and business methods for using such to survive hard times.
“Through skills teaching and learning, mentorship and orientation, this programme is geared to deliver on the promise one small batch at a time”.
The Mayor further said the programme was in fulfilment of his electioneering promises to the people, adding that there is no ward in Phalga that has not benefitted from the Council’s developmental projects.
He charged them to make sure the equipment are put into proper use, adding that the council will frown at any attempt to sell off the starter packs.
Also speaking the consultant to the Port Harcourt City Entrepreneurship Trades and Skills Development Programme, Chief Arthur Kalagbor, said the programme was meticulously implemented, adding that their part was to ensure quality control.
He said the third phase has produced the best grauates and congratulated the trainees for their successfully passing through the programme.
According to him, 258 registered for the third batch and some dropped out.
Kalagbor said the programme was designed to train them to job creators instead of job seekers, adding that with the quality of training given them, the trainees will positively influence the economy of the city.
Earlier, Chairman Entrepreneurship And Empowerment Committee of the Port Harcourt City Local Government, Dr Ezebunwo Nyeche, said “the programme was conceived by the Mayor of the City as a way of alleviating poverty and unemployment among our youths and women through the redirection of their minds from being job seekers to becoming self-employed by training.
“We equipped them with relevant and marketable skills and competencies that would enable them to earn more income and become employers of labour”.
He said the committee was “delighted with the energy, joy and happiness exhibited by the graduands in the course of training”, adding that “it was a confirmation that the programme has achieved its desired results”.
Dr Nyeche also urged the graduands to make proper use of the skills acquired to improve themselves.
Some of the graduands thanked the Mayor for the skills and promised not to disappoint him.
