Breast Cancer Constitutes 22.7% Of Infection In Nigeria – Commissioner

As the world commemorates the 2023 “World Cancer Month”, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze C. Oreh, has said breast cancer accounts for 22.7 percent of cancers in Nigeria.
In her opening address to kick off activities for the 2023 commemoration, tagged “I Will Walk To Kick Out Breast Cancer”, Dr. Oreh said breast cancer also accounted for 12,000 deaths in 2018.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Programme Manager, Non-Communicable Diseases, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Sandra Abolo, urged women of child-bearing age, and men to ensure early diagnosis in order to prevent breast cancer.
She explained that the event of the day, “I will walk to kick out breast cancer”, is intended to create necessary awareness among the public, both women and men.
“Today, we are here to commemorate breast cancer awareness month. October every year is usually for breast cancer awareness month, where we raise awareness on breast cancer, and how to prevent, and control it”, she said.
According to the Commissioner, breast cancer is the commonest cancer in females world wide, but it also occurs in males.
“We organise this walk to raise awareness to tell people that breast cancer kills, but it is preventable”, she stated.
She identified three key symptoms of breast cancer: breast pain, nipple retracting in, and changes on the skin of the breast.
The health boss, therefore, adviced that girls and women carry out regular monthly self-breast examination to ascertain their breast cancer status.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, the founder of “Engraced Life Foundation”, Ethel Olomu, stressed on the need to create awareness on how to prevent breast cancer.
Olomu, who is a breast cancer survivor, said, to be able to prevent breast cancer is to “be proactive”.
According to her, being proactive means “to be breast health aware, to be breast health conscious, and to be breast health heathy”.
The theme for this year’s breast cancer awareness month is “Close The Care Gap”.
The breast cancer walk commenced at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, through GRA, Phase 1, through Stadium Road, Elekahia, to Rumuomasi, and back to the polytechnic.
The one month long breast cancer programme, which will also include screening in all the 23 Local Government Areas of the State, is organized by the Rivers State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO), and Engraced Life Foundation.

NDDC Begins N50,000 Monthly Payment To 10,000 N’Delta Youths

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun the payment of N50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 indigenous youths from the Niger Delta under its Youths Internship Scheme.
The Director of Corporate Affairs at the NDDC, Mrs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, disclosed this to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, yesterday.
She explained that the beneficiaries would undergo practical, hands-on training across the various organisations for 12 months to develop critical skills.
Recall that during the inauguration of the scheme on July 31, 2024, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had announced the Federal Government’s approval of a N50,000 monthly stipend for the trainees.
According to Thompson-Wakama, the commission has successfully completed the selection process and has begun placing trainees in organisations to gain practical experience.
“Consequently, with the completion of these phases, the payment of the monthly stipends has also commenced,” she announced.
She revealed that the 10,000 beneficiaries were transparently selected from over 3.2 million youths who registered for the empowerment programme.
“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential and aspirations of our youths to improve themselves.
“NDDC remains steadfast in ensuring this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future,” she stated.
Thompson-Wakama explained that the scheme had enabled the commission to collate essential data, including the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of the youths in the region.
The data, she explained, would guide the commission in designing programmes tailored to address the unique challenges faced by young people.
She disclosed that the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a global audit and consultancy firm, to enhance the commission’s corporate governance framework.
“KPMG has produced a Governance Advisory Report that will serve as a tool to support the commission’s transition from a transaction-based to a transformation-focussed policy,” Thompson-Wakama added.
The director commended the youths for their patience and cooperation during the selection process for the scheme.
