ICT: We Need African Solutions For African Problems – Expert
A Cross River State-born partner of the Silicon Valley Product Group (SVPG), Mr Christian Idiodi, says Africa needs African solutions to its challenges.
Idiodi disclosed this on Saturday when he led a team of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts from the United States and Europe to Governor Bassey Otu in Calabar.
SVPG is an ICT based company created to share senior level experience and best practices with technology companies and offers services and training to government.
He said they were interested in training Africans in skills such as product management, product design and computer engineering that would help them create solutions with technology to solve problems in diverse areas.
Idiodi, who is also the founder of Innovate Africa Foundation, said they needed to invest in young people to equip them with skills needed to work anywhere in the world and be global leaders.
“Most importantly, we need to change the mindset of Africans by training them to create African solutions for African problems because we don’t want our talents to leave for other countries.
“We want them to remain here and be able to create solutions that will provide jobs and boost opportunities in Africa”, he said.
Responding, Otu disclosed that God had blessed Cross River State with intelligent people in ICT but what the state lacked was proper ICT hubs.
He advised the ICT experts to take advantage of the pool of young and active population to establish ICT hubs, adding that the state was ready to partner with SVPG in establishing the hubs and training its citizens.
“As a technology-friendly government, we want to foster an environment that supports innovation in several ways, including research and development.
“This is by encouraging industry partnerships, and most importantly, creating policies and regulations that incentivise innovation.
“We have intelligent people in the area of ICT, what we lack are ICT hubs for our young and active people to take advantage of; so, we will love to partner with you in establishing these hubs for training of our people”, the Governor noted.
Similarly, Founder and Partner of SVPG, Mr Marty Cagan, said they were in Nigeria to plant seeds in Africa which would enable the continent develop solutions for its challenges using ICT.
The Tide source reports that the group had earlier had a four-day Inspire Africa Conference in Lagos with over 31 African countries in attendance.
It engaged youths from different secondary schools in Calabar.
They also embarked on some projects in Auntie Margaret Group of Schools in Calabar, where the leader of the team underwent his elementary education.

NDDC Begins N50,000 Monthly Payment To 10,000 N’Delta Youths

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun the payment of N50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 indigenous youths from the Niger Delta under its Youths Internship Scheme.
The Director of Corporate Affairs at the NDDC, Mrs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, disclosed this to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, yesterday.
She explained that the beneficiaries would undergo practical, hands-on training across the various organisations for 12 months to develop critical skills.
Recall that during the inauguration of the scheme on July 31, 2024, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had announced the Federal Government’s approval of a N50,000 monthly stipend for the trainees.
According to Thompson-Wakama, the commission has successfully completed the selection process and has begun placing trainees in organisations to gain practical experience.
“Consequently, with the completion of these phases, the payment of the monthly stipends has also commenced,” she announced.
She revealed that the 10,000 beneficiaries were transparently selected from over 3.2 million youths who registered for the empowerment programme.
“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential and aspirations of our youths to improve themselves.
“NDDC remains steadfast in ensuring this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future,” she stated.
Thompson-Wakama explained that the scheme had enabled the commission to collate essential data, including the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of the youths in the region.
The data, she explained, would guide the commission in designing programmes tailored to address the unique challenges faced by young people.
She disclosed that the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a global audit and consultancy firm, to enhance the commission’s corporate governance framework.
“KPMG has produced a Governance Advisory Report that will serve as a tool to support the commission’s transition from a transaction-based to a transformation-focussed policy,” Thompson-Wakama added.
The director commended the youths for their patience and cooperation during the selection process for the scheme.
