BSN Wants More Attention To Flood Areas, Victims
The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has called on the Federal Government to show more concern in the plight of victims of areas affected by flood in the country, particularly as it concerns Rivers and Bayelsa States.
Making the call in Port Harcourt, during BSN’s October 2022 Management Committee Meeting at the First Baptist Church, Omoku, Headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Chairman, BSN, Rivers/Bayelsa Area, Elder Omoni Ayo-Tamuno, described this year’s flood as “unprecedented heavy flood”.
He specifically called on the Rivers and Bayelsa State Governments to “take the bull by the horns by ensuring that the impact of flood is greatly reduced, if not totally stopped in the two sister states”.
Ayo-Tamuno marvelled at the extent of the flood, noting that its devastation “is worse compared to the flood in 2012, which had hitherto been seen as the worse”.
While commending the release of #1 billion by the Rivers State Government for intervention, he called on the Bayelsa Government to do same to alleviate the suffering of the citizens.
The Chairman, however, stressed the need for effective monitoring of fund and relief materials sent to victims, saying that in the past such gestures hardly get to the affected people or communities, “at least not the actual quantities sent”.
He stressed the need for sincerity on the part of those in charge of materials or fund meant for affected people, saying “only honest, God-fearing and patriotic Nigerians should be given the task to relate with the victims”.
Elder Ayo-Tamuno expressed unhappiness over statements credited to a Federal Minister, that the flood had not reached the state to declare a state of emergency.
“Is it when all our people are dead or when affected communities are completely submerged that a state of emergency can be declared?
“Now is the time to act and save our people. Tomorrow may be too late.
“On the road through Ahoada to Omoku, one sees a lot of houses, business premises, church buildings, schools, health institutions, farm lands, and even the roads and streets completely flooded and people are helplessly crying for help”, he stated.
Elder Ayo-Tamuno further appealed to all stakeholders to avoid playing politics with the flood.
“All should come together and find lasting solutions to this yearly occurrence that is displacing our people from their ancestry native homes.
“That it keeps occuring does not paint the authorities in good light as far as the welfare of the affected areas are concerned”, he concluded
