A Non-Governmental Organisation under the aegies of “Step-Up for Women in Journalism Initiative” (SUPWIJI) has urged media practitioners to be financially independent to uphold integrity in their profession.
The Executive Director of SUPWIJI, Mrs Ann Godwin, gave the charge recently at a workshop organised by the group to mark its one year anniversary in Port Harcourt.

She stated the need for media practitioners to develop their skills and invest in legitimate businesses that will enhance their earning.
Godwin also stressed the need for women journalists to begin to take up leadership spaces in the media industry to enable them stand out in the profession.
Similarly, the Executive Director of AWIB, Mrs Josephine Itonyo, stated the need for women in the media to be “powerful and influential wherever they find themselves”.
Itonyo, represented by Mrs Mourinho Umah, the Administrator for AWIB, urged women journalists to develop themselves financially by investing in legitimate businesses that would give them financial Independence.
According to Itonyo, “media practitioners should have integrity and a legitimate way of making money to be financially independent.
“They should also take advantage of investment opportunities and learn skills or knowledge that can increase their earning capacity.
“Media practitioners should be more influential and relevant in the society, avoid negative attitude that will question their integrity.
“They should not be money wasters, avoid paying late fees and missing deadlines, instead they should save their finance for the rainy day and block linkages”, she said.
