Osinbajo Urges Caution On Africa’s Economic Sovereignty

Published

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says Africa’s developmental aspirations can be actualised by deepening cooperation and collaboration with the rest of the world.
Osinbajo stated this at the opening session of a panel on the ongoing Africa CEO Forum holding in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire.
In a statement signed by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, on Monday, Osinbajo stressed the importance of collaboration between Africa and the rest of the world, saying there is a need for caution on the issue of economic sovereignty.
Osinbajo said “I think that we have to be a bit more careful with the concept of economic sovereignty because we really need to collaborate more and with the way that development is going, we need to watch some of these things.
“For instance, if we look at the way that technology is going which is key for us in Nigeria, particularly issues of taxation of tech companies and all of that, it is evident that this is difficult and it is a major expression of sovereign power – the power to tax.
“The way that the world and technology are structured today, there is no way that you can use the same basis – personal and territorial basis for taxation.
“These are multinational enterprises that spread across countries and continents. We have got to cooperate with the world and the international tax system to ensure that we are able to derive maximum benefit; we have got to take a seat at the table and ensure that all of the various initiatives on international taxation favour us in Africa”.
According to the Vice President, while Africa is looking inwards, it has to be very careful to look outwards as well because a lot of money is obviously used by tech companies across the world and a lot of African countries are value creators for these companies.
He stressed the need for Africa to look inwards and at the same time keep its eyes on the ball and recognising that the world had gone beyond brick and mortar.
“The world is now more about intellectual capital. We have to think of how we can work with the world to achieve maximum benefit for our intellectual capacity”, he said.
During an interaction with organisers of the forum, the CEO of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, spoke about the concept of economic sovereignty, urging Africa to look inwards as a way of fast-tracking development on the continent.
He cited leveraging opportunities provided by the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and improving infrastructure as some of the key areas that leaders in the continent must focus on.

Earlier at the opening ceremony of the forum, President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, commended the initiative of the organisers to bring together public and private sector leaders across the continent and beyond to discuss and develop new paths aimed at boosting the transformation of economies across Africa.

He said that though the COVID-19 pandemic might have negatively impacted growth projections in the continent, the vision of the forum and similar efforts were geared towards fruitful collaborations, “building new partnerships between the public and private sectors, especially providing opportunities for young Africans with particular focus on green economy.”

On his part, the President and Founder of the Africa CEO Forum, Amir Yahmed, commended leaders across the continent for their efforts despite the disruptions in the global economy occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

Yahmed stated that the economic sovereignty, a green economy, industrial transformation among others were paths to Africa’s prosperity.

APC Urges Gov Aiyedatiwa To Run Inclusive Govt

Published

After a marathon meeting with aggrieved governorship aspirants who participated in last Saturday’s primary election in Ondo State, the ruling All Progressives Congress has urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to run an inclusive government.
The outcome of the two-hour meeting, which started at about 4.30 pm, was disclosed by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Duro Meseko.
Addressing journalists at the party secretariat in Abuja, Meseko said the party’s National Working Committee took the position after dialoguing with the governor and the aggrieved aspirants to create a united front ahead of the November governorship election.
He said, “We are here this evening to brief you about the meeting that was held by the NWC with all the aspirants that participated in last week’s governorship primary in Ondo State. The candidate and the remaining 15 aspirants were invited, and two key resolutions were reached.
“One, it was agreed at the meeting that because of the complaints that trailed the outcome of the primary by some of the aspirants, there is a need for the party to continue dialogue with all the aspirants individually and collectively to have a common ground for the forthcoming elections in the state. Also, it is for them to be able to work together as a united family.
“Secondly, it was also agreed that the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, should immediately work towards instituting what we call ‘inclusive governance’ in the state by involving all the other aspirants. Of course, we know most of the aspirants won’t be able to participate in his government. But they have people that we can allow to make input. He should work and relate with them to move the state forward. These were the two key ingredients taken out of today’s meeting.”
Aside from the former commissioner for finance and governorship aspirant in Ondo, Wale Akinterinwa, virtually all the aspirants who contested the last primary were present at the peace meeting.
The resolution of the ruling party was also re-echoed by the State Chairman of Ondo APC, Ade Adetimehin, while addressing reporters at the secretariat.
“As earlier disclosed by the deputy national publicity secretary, the NWC agreed after the two-hour deliberation that we will continue to dialogue with all the aspirants. We will continue to engage both at the national and state level.
“The second resolution was to run an inclusive government in Ondo State. Our governor was there when it was taken and it is mandatory that it must commence immediately. This must include the aspirants and other members of our party in Ondo State. We believe Ondo is a progressive state. We have a large chunk of party supporters in the APC.
“In the last election, we have three senatorial seats won by the APC. In the House of Representatives, we won eight out of nine seats. Out of 26 seats in the State Assembly, we got 22. I believe you will agree with me that Ondo is an APC state.
“What we came here to deliberate is to decide the mode of working together and to have less division within our party. I want to thank all the aspirants. Sixteen contested in the last primary election. Today’s meeting was attended by 15. That shows we have given room for dialogue. That is what we are here to do,” he stated.
Earlier, Aiyedatiwa had told journalists after he visited the State House in Abuja on Thursday that the election held as against the speculation being in a section of the media.
The governor also admitted that party leaders are working hard to resolve the disagreement between him and the aspirants to ensure they work as one.

Ogun PDP Chairman, Adebutu Trade Blames Over Electoral Defeat

Published

on

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Sikirullai Ogundele, yesterday, heaped the blame of the party’s loss of the 2023 governorship election on the alleged highhandedness of its governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.
Ogundele made the allegations while addressing members and leaders of the party during a meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital ahead of the party congress.
He accused Adebutu of being responsible for the crisis in the party, saying the reason the party was not in government was because of Adebutu’s high-handedness and disregard for party leadership.
He said, “The reason why we are not in power today is because of Hon. Ladi Adebutu. 90 per cent of the reasons why we are not in government today were caused by Hon. Ladi Adebutu and this is because of his high-handedness. He does not listen to anybody’s advice.
“Adebutu has been the major reason why the party has been failing since the 2019 election. I don’t think Adebutu himself is interested in becoming the governor.
“Atiku came to Abeokuta twice to plead with Adebutu that we should put OGD (former Governor Gbenga Daniel) on the ballot, but he refused. If we had put OGD (Daniel) on the ballot, the party would have won many seats at the election.
“Everybody was aware that Atiku came to Ogun State twice to beg him (Adebutu). Obasanjo too begged him, but he refused to shift ground.”
He has however vowed to rescue the party’s structure from Adebutu, insisting that the PDP is not anybody’s personal property.
Ogundele said the PDP must be seen and run as a political party that is fair and just to every member irrespective of their financial status or position.
Also speaking, the deputy governorship candidate of the party at the 2023 election, Adekunle Akinlade, said the party must be better repositioned to defeat the ruling party in 2027.
“What we are saying is that if we must win or perform differently in 2027, we must reposition this party. We must bring in everybody to this party, we must make everybody feel comfortable that this party is for all of us.
“We must put the past behind us, we must put 2023 behind us and forge a strong front that can allow us to face whatever the future holds.
“The party must be more disciplined and our leaders must have the right temperament and good character”, Akinlade said.
But reacting, Adebutu described Ogundele’s outburst as nothing but a “foul cry from a man after his gains”.

Iheanacho said a joint examination was conducted in the presence of relevant units of the customs, and police and the suspected items were found to contain 40 cartons and sacks totalling 6,240 pieces of cap-sensitive dynamite explosives (super power 90).
