Diasporan Business Executive Wants Increased Tourism Investment

By: Corlins Walter
A Nigerian diasporan business executive, Jerry Wanodi has urged both the Federal and State governments to increase investment in the tourism industry, to expand the nation’s economic potentials.
Wanodi, a Rivers State born business executive resident in the United States, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen, shortly on arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa, Friday, said the tourism sector holds huge potentials for the economic growth and development of the country.
He said Nigeria has robust tourism opportunities which should be harnessed to create jobs and enhance growth.
According to him, many International organizations have tourism experts and have also spread their clubs and presence in many countries around the world.
Highlighting on the potentials of an international organization, the Skal International on tourism, Wanodi said the organization brings together all levels of industry practitioners in travel and tourism.
According to him,the strength of Skal members and their enormous influence could help the tourism market in Nigeria, as the country is one of the major leading tourist destinations despite challenges currently being encountered.
He emphasised the sheer strength of the organization that has about 22,000 members worldwide, including its Nigerian members, adding that such could help the market in Nigeria to achieve accelerated growth.
”If we start with the Africa Area Committee congress, key industry players within Africa will gather in Nigeria to have firsthand experience of Nigeria’s tourism culture.
“It will bring about positive publicity and increase in revenue, not to mention the impact on our economy, if Nigeria could host over 5,000 people during the World Congress.
“They have done it in some countries like Mexico, USA, China, South Africa, Kenya, Canada, just to mention a few, the impact cannot be over emphasised”, he stated.
Wanodi further emphasised that tourism as an industry is bigger than the oil industry, if the sector will be properly harnessed and emphasized that it will create more employment.
