Reps Back Fuel Subsidy Removal … Hail Tinubu’s Courage, Appeal For Patience With New Govt

The House of Representatives at yesterday’s plenary session hailed the removal of oil subsidy by President Bola Tinubu.
The House commended Tinubu for his courage, asking Nigerians to be patient with the new administration.
The commendation and the appeal came on the heels of a motion under matters of urgent public importance moved at the plenary by Hon. Jimoh Olajide representing Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency.
The Tide reports that Tinubu, during his inaugural speech as President at the Eagles Square, Abuja, on Monday, announced the removal of the oil subsidy.
The declaration has, however, elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians as the immediate effects are now being felt nationwide with many oil marketers and filling stations shutting down while those selling fuel have hiked the pump prices from N195 to as high as N750 per liter.
Moving the motion, Olajide noted that, “Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on May 29th, 2023 made a public pronouncement on fuel subsidy removal.
“The President, Tinubu is a concerned senior citizen whose agenda is to favour the down trodden for the purpose of humanity.
“There is no provision for fuel subsidy in the 2023 Appropriation Act.
“The current 9th Assembly and the past administration had given it a legal backing.
“Legislative actions in supporting Mr President in delivering dividends of democracy will go a long way in enhancing development because he asked for it, he campaigned for it!! And he is ready for the task ahead.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the tutor-general of Nigerian politics is concerned about the masses and has meaningful objective to utilize Nigeria funds appropriately with budgetary reforms agenda on education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, food, security and above all, security of lives and property as embedded in the constitution”.
Adopting the motion, the House hailed Tinubu’s “courage and boldness to serve our country Nigeria with honesty and integrity”.
The House also congratulated the President for his readiness for national task ahead and service to humanity and appealed to Nigerians to “remain patient, resilient and prayerful so that the President can deliver on his promises.”
Some lawmakers’ attempt to speak against the motion failed as the gavel had already been hit by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
The Speaker, however, gave room for such in the course of the proceedings to accommodate opposing views.

Stop Panic Buying, Subsidy Removal Not Immediate – Tinubu

Published

on

The Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Media Centre has urged Nigerians to stop panic buying of petroleum product over the statement of President Bola Tinubu on fuel subsidy.
The Tinubu media centre made this appeal in a statement issued via its verified Twitter handle, yesterday.
It noted that the President’s statement that petrol subsidy had stopped was not a new development but a restatement of the Federal Government’s intention to end subsidy by June.
Recall that, in his inaugural speech on Monday, Tinubu said the petrol subsidy regime was over.
The President said, “On fuel subsidy, unfortunately, the budget, before I assumed office, is that no provision is there for fuel subsidy.
So, fuel subsidy is gone.”
Following Tinubu’s comments, huge queues resurfaced at filling stations in some parts of Nigeria, a situation the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) blamed on panic buying.
But, the Tinubu media centre said the rush to purchase petrol “is needless” as the President only spoke based on already existing plans.
The centre added that the removal of the subsidy will not happen soon.
It said, “The public is advised to note that President Bola Tinubu’s declaration that “subsidy is gone” is neither a new development nor an action of his new administration,” the statement reads.
“He was merely communicating the status quo, considering that the previous administration’s budget for fuel subsidy was planned and approved to last for only the first half of the year.
“Effectively, this means that by the end of June, the Federal govyernment will be without funds to continue the subsidy regime, translating to its termination. The panic-buying that has ensued as a result of the communication is needless; it will not take immediate effect.
“Furthermore, President Tinubu was clear about his plans to re-channel the funds previously devoted to the payment of subsidies into better investments that will cushion the effects of the removal on the general public, especially the poor.
“This includes, but is not limited to investments in public infrastructure, education, healthcare, and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions of Nigerians and increase their earning potentials.”
