Babangida Aliyu, A Mole In PDP, Wike Insists
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has accused former governor of Niger State, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of being a mole of the ruling party in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said it was unfortunate that the PDP has continued to allow the former Niger State governor to remain a member of its highest decision-making body after he publicly confessed to working alongside others to frustrate former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid in 2015.
The governor, who stated these during a media chat at the Government House, Port Harcourt, last Monday, stressed that it was disturbing that while governors and other stakeholders were working assiduously to strategically position the PDP to take over the realm of power in 2023, the likes of Aliyu were working as All Progressives Congress (APC) moles in PDP.
“Aliyu Babangida is a mole in PDP. These are people who get information, and in the night, they go to the ruling party (APC), and give them the information.”
Wike declared that contrary to insinuations by Babangida, there does not exist any frosty relationship between him and the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.
According to him, in politics, people are bound to disagree on certain issues, but that cannot be misconstrued as a rift in their relationship.
“The same Aliyu, in 2017, was one of those who opposed Secondus to be chairman of the party. He only came on board at the dying minute when he knew Secondus was coasting to victory.”
The governor also clarified that he was not aware if the PDP national chairman has disagreement with stakeholders of the party in Rivers State.
He stressed that if there existed any form of conflict between Secondus and other stakeholders in the state, the national chairman would have made it known to all concerned.
Wike explained that the reason why Babanigda has recently embarked on a campaign of calumny against him was because he has refused to invite him to commission some of his legacy projects in Rivers State.
He maintained that only former governors and incumbent ones who have delivered or were delivering democratic dividends in their states were qualified to inaugurate projects in Rivers State.
Reacting to Babangida’s accusation that he was a dictator in the PDP, the governor said it was rather disingenuous for a man who has refused to allow a credible party congress to take place in Niger State to cast aspersions on him.
“In 2015, what happened to him, he insisted his own boy will be governor. In 2019, he insisted again, and PDP lost. Who is the dictator? Up till now, the reason why the state (Niger) congress cannot take place is because he wants to dictate who will be chairman of the party.”
He further continued, “We have been working hard in Rivers State to see we don’t have the ruling APC in Rivers State. Ask Aliyu if he can do the same in Niger State. If there is election today, can he make PDP win in Niger State? As I speak to you, no state congress has been held in Niger State. It is because of his dictatorial tendency.”
The governor described Babangida’s recommendation that the NWC of the PDP should suspend him from the party as childish.
He stressed that if the former Niger State governor has any modicum of self-esteem, even as a liability to PDP, he would have been circumspect and refrained from making denigrating comments against one whose state has accounted for the highest votes gotten by the PDP since 1999.
To buttress his claim that Babangida was a liability to the PDP, Wike noted that in 2015, while serving as a governor of Niger State, the PDP lost woefully in the general election.
According to him, worst still, in 2019 general election, the PDP failed to win any elective position in Niger State.
“What is the impact of such a person as far as the party is concerned? In 2019, despite the federal might that was against us in Rivers State, we still were able to deliver all the senatorial candidates, all the House of Representatives candidates. So, who is more profitably to the party? Is it the man who cannot even win in his constituency?”
He further added, “If Aliyu says he will leave PDP today, nobody will shake; nobody will even bother. But I say I will leave PDP tomorrow, you will know the consequences of it.”
The governor dared those who have been insinuating that he wants to contest for PDP presidential ticket in 2023 because of his tirelessness in delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Rivers State, to prove that he has declared such intention to them.
He, however, reiterated that nobody can intimidate him from contesting for the PDP presidential ticket, if he decides to.
On Babangida’s claim that PDP will win the governorship election in Ebonyi and Cross River states, respectively in 2023, the governor described this as laughable.
He dared the former Niger State to first of all deliver his state from the APC before pontificating about other states.
“You have heard him say that PDP will recover Ebonyi and Cross River. Tell me what will be his contribution? Tell me what his strategy is for them (PDP) to recover the states? A man, who even in his own state cannot provide the votes, he is saying that PDP will recover so and so states. Recover your own first! Show the capacity that you have!”
The governor warned the PDP to be wary of Aliyu Babangida and other moles who were determined to ruin the party’s chances of winning the 2023 general election.
He noted that while PDP governors were busy delivering democratic dividends in their respective states, the likes of Babangida were busy sowing seeds of discord.
“That was one of those who, with other governors, were going round to bring down PDP (in 2015), and of course, he was happy doing that. Today, look at the consequences. Today, that is the man that has the temerity, the audacity to talk to a governor whose state produced the highest vote in 2015 (1.5million votes), and the ruling party never had 25 per cent. Ask Aliyu, in Niger State, if we (PDP) got 10 percent of the votes.”

May Day: Labour Seeks Inclusiveness In Policy-making

The Organised Labour yesterday, called on the Federal Government to ensure inclusiveness in policy making and guide against erosion of rights, such as free speech and association.
The President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Joe Ajaero made the call at the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Eagle’s Square, Abuja.
The Tide source reports Ajaero and the President, Trade Union Congress, Mr Festus Osifo delivered a joint statement on behalf of the organised labour at the event.
Ajaero described May Day as, not only a moment to honour workers’ sacrifices, but also a platform to demand justice and accountability from those in public office.
He frowned at the alleged suppression of protests, and the erosion of rights of workers by some agents
According to him, workers have a duty to resist economic injustice, insecurity, and policies that undermine their dignity.
Speaking on the theme of the day, the NLC President underscored the need for Nigerian workers to reclaim the civic space and resist policies that contribute to worsening economic conditions.
“Our theme this year – “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the midst of Economic Hardship – reflects the urgent need for citizens to protect democracy and push back against repression.
“The civic space, where Nigerians express their concerns and challenge injustices is shrinking.
“If we fail to reclaim this space, the foundation of our democracy risks collapse,” he said
Ajaero, therefore, urged workers to unite and resist division, fear, and despair.
He also urged them to mobilise and organise for change, declaring that the right to demand better conditions is non-negotiable.
“Without workers, there is no society; without labour, there is no development. We must take our place in the fight for economic justice and democratic governance.”
Speaking in the same veins, Osifo said workers are the backbone of the nation—the educators, healthcare providers, builders, farmers, and innovators who sustain its economy -.
He stressed the need for the labour to reclaim the civic space even in the midst of economic hardship.

2025 UTME: JAMB Disowns Site Requesting Payment From Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disassociated itself from a fraudulent site requesting payments from candidates who missed the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The board said that the site, “Copyrightwriter Personal J Rescheduling Flw” and account number 8520641017 at Sterling Bank, associated with it, are scam.
The disclaimer is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday by the Board’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr Fabian Benjamin.
Benjamin said the account is being exploited to defraud unsuspecting candidates who missed their UTME.
“We issue this urgent notice to inform the public about this nefarious scheme targeting candidates who were unable to participate in the UTME.
“Some unscrupulous individuals are deceitfully soliciting payments of N15,700 under the false pretence of offering rescheduling services for the examination.
“Let us be unequivocal: this, it is a blatant scam, and we are confident that the public will not fall prey to such cheap and regressive tactics.
” The individuals behind this scam have no affiliation with JAMB or any legitimate government agency.
“The account details provided in these communications are entirely fictitious and bear no connection to any official processes; they exist solely for the purpose of perpetrating fraud,” he said.
Benjamin called on Sterling bank to take immediate and decisive action against this criminal activity.
According to him, JAMB has reported the matter to the relevant security agencies and actively pursuing those responsible for this deceitful act.
He further said that “JAMB does not reschedule examinations for candidates who miss their scheduled tests due to reasons unrelated to the Board’s actions”.
He, however, said that the Board is conducting a thorough investigation for candidates whose biometrics failed during verification and were thus unable to sit for the examination.
He said those without discrepancies would be invited to retake the examination at no cost , stressing that “no cost is required”
“It is imperative to understand that JAMB does not charge any fees for examinations after a candidate has completed their registration.
“We strongly urge all candidates to remain vigilant and not to succumb to these fraudulent schemes.
“Protect yourselves and report any suspicious activity immediately,” he explained.

NDDC Seeks UN’s Support To Accelerate Niger Delta Development

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has expressed its willingness to partner with the United Nations (UN) to accelerate the development of the Niger Delta region.
Dr Samual Ogbuku, Managing Director of the NDDC, made the appeal in a statement issued by the commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mrs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, in Port Harcourt on yesterday.
According to the statement, Ogbuku sought the UN’s support during his visit to the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator (UNRHC), Mr Mohammed Fall, at the UN regional office in Abuja.
He called on the global body to provide the NDDC with technical assistance and expert services to support the region’s development.
“We are eager to collaborate with the UN, recognising that the state governments in the region and the NDDC alone cannot achieve the level of regional development required,” he said.
Ogbuku identified key areas where support would be needed, including the provision of portable and affordable drinking water powered by high-tech solar energy sources.
He also highlighted the importance of reforesting the mangrove swamps, which have been severely damaged by decades of environmental degradation caused by oil exploration in the Niger Delta.
“Although the NDDC has made progress in providing solar-powered streetlights across the region, we still require UN support in delivering solar energy solutions for residential buildings.
“We also wish to explore the possibility of installing solar mini-grids in homes across communities, which would boost local commerce and trade,” he added.
The NDDC managing director further appealed for increased UN involvement in areas such as healthcare, education, youth training, gender development, and food security.
Ogunku stated that such interventions would significantly enhance the standard of living in the region.
In response, Fall affirmed the UN’s readiness to collaborate with the NDDC to fast track development in the Niger Delta.
He assured that the UN would support initiatives in food security, job creation, education, and renewable energy, among other areas.
“We aim to approach development in the Niger Delta holistically, rather than focusing solely on environmental pollution.
“This is merely an entry point; however, the UN’s development vision aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are designed to positively impact various aspects of people’s lives,” Fall stated.
He assured the NDDC of continued and fruitful engagements to drive the region’s development.
