CRSG Unveils Covid-19 Isolation Bay In UNICAL, Receives Vaccines

The Cross River State Government has commissioned a 20-bed Isolation bay for suspected Covid-19 patients in the University of Calabar (UNICAL)
The Isolation Bay, said to have been constructed with tents, has 20 beds, divided into two sides for males and females for checking possible Covid-19 ailments,
Commissioning the project, to mark the 100 days of the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Obi, the State’s Health Commissioner, Dr Betta Edu, commended the institution for the feat.
She said the VC had changed the dynamics of COVID-19 response in Nigeria and will give confidence to parents that their children are in safe hands as well as the students who can now concentrate on their studies.
“’The campus will also serve as a sample collection centre and students who want to get tested will undergo the test without being charged”.
She advocated for the decentralisation of the Covid-19 response at all levels.
The chairman of the UNICAL Covid-19 Taskforce, Dr Akaba Kingsley, said the school was happy for accomplishing the feat within three weeks
Vice-Chancellor, University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, in her comments said the institution consulted with the Senate which agreed that the school and the bay be opened, whereas all other varsities were yet to open
She said proactive measures were put in place to ensure there was no outbreak of the virus in the institution, “The Senate decided we should resume and have physical contact at a time many schools did not want to take any risk.”
