The certification of the Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA), which was earlier scheduled to be completed this December has been extended till March next year.
The Tide’s findings on the processes of the certification reveal that some of the requirements stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for the certification are yet to be completed.
The Tide reports that until these facilities and infrastructural standard set by the ICAO are completed, the certification of the Port Harcourt International Airports might not take place.
Speaking on the matter in an interview with our correspondent recently, the Assistant General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Kunle Akinbode, said the major things about certification were safety and security.
According to him, the perimeter fencing of the Port Harcourt airport has not been completed, as well as other access roads around the airport.
He said that the contract for the perimeter fencing of the airport had been awarded while the access roads round the airport were currently being executed to make movement round the airport easier in time of emergency.
Apart from the roads and the perimeter fencing, Akinbode said the fire fighting facilities must be up to the standard of the ICAO, since the issue of certification is all about safety and security.
He pointed out that the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano and the Port Harcourt airport were on the same page of certification process, after the certification of the first two airports; Lagos and Abuja.
He also said that certification experts and professionals from the ICAO were already on ground at the Port Harcourt airport for the purpose of the certification.
Our correspondent reports that a one-storey potter cabin structure has been raised by the management of the Port Harcourt airport as the certification office.
It would be recalled that the Port Harcourt Airport Manager, Mr Felix Akinbinu, had told aviation correspondents in an interview recently that the airport may be certificated in December this year.
