Group Tasks FG On Maritime, Aviation Overhaul
A non-governmental group, Admiralty Lawyers Society of Nigeria, has tasked the Federal Government on the maritime and aviation sectors of the nation’s economy.
The President of the Society, Mr. Angus Chukwuka, who was speaking at the Group Foundation Membership Training in Port Harcourt, Wednesday, noted that the maritime and aviation sectors need to be overhauled in keeping with global best practices.
Chukwuka observed that there was enormous potential in the marine and air transport business and encouraged the Federal Government and private sectors to stake steps towards harnessing the potentials in the industry.
He however expressed worry that the eastern ports which have great potentials to turn around the fortunes of the nation were being cdeliberately suppressed.
According to him, “the eastern ports, which have great potentials to turn around the economy of this country,… is being deleberately suppressed. The potentials of the eastern ports are not being harnessed.
He charged private investors to fashion a better framework to harness the potential of the eastern ports explaining that it was important to explore the potentials in the maritime industry as the prospects in the oil sector were diminishing.
He also said that the capacity of the maritime and aviation industries should be upgraded without compromising the standards of ship and aircraft operations.
Commenting on the insecurity in the sector, he enjoined the private sector to raise their interest level by investing in security in the industry as well as improve manpower strength.
