Market Traders Hail Wike, Wife …As First Couple Buys Household Needs
Traders at the Ultra-Modern New Layout Market on Creek Road, Port Harcourt, Wednesday hailed the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and his wife, Justice Suzzette Eberechi, for their display of simplicity, humility and accessibility towards the common man.
Secretary of the Ultra Modern New Layout Market Women Association, Mrs Ibiene Iyalla, made this commendation while speaking on behalf of the traders.
Iyalla observed that the action of the first couple of the state is an indication that they identified with the plight of the common man in the face of the present economic realities the nation was undergoing.
She used to chance to ask the governor to use his good office to look into the matter of salary increase for civil servants, saying, “they form the bulk of our customers, each time the civil servants are owed salaries or underpaid, we the traders suffer, we feel the brunt”.
The union leader thanked the governor and his wife for patronising the market and expressed the hope that their visit would be the spring board the market needed to bounce back full scale since its reconstruction and reopening.
The governor had taken his wife on a bus to the market in late afternoon, on Wednesday and worked round the market negotiating and paying for household cooking items, wrappers and beads while sharing jokes and acknowledging cheers from the traders.
Wike assured them that his administration would always work to promote the welfare of the traders.
