Rerun: RSG Invites Foreign Monitors …Says Adequate Focus’ll Check Fraud, Violence …Alerts On Plans To Produce Illegal Results

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has called on the international community to take serious interest in the plot by the police to start the indiscriminate arrest of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters few days to the December 10 rerun elections.

The governor declared that through the state’s established intelligence channel, he was in possession of the list of PDP supporters earmarked for arrest by the police before the rerun elections.

He spoke on Wednesday during the flag-off of the Chokocho-Umuechem-Ozuzu Road in Etche Local Government Area.

He said: “They have written the names of those they want to arrest. In Khana Local Government Area alone, they have earmarked 103 persons for arrest.

“You didn’t arrest them before now, but you want to arrest them at this point because election is approaching”.

The governor called on the people of the state to resist any such politically motivated arrests, pointing out that such actions aimed at promoting the interest of an unpopular All Progressives Congress (APC) will not be tolerated.

He said: “Now that it is obvious that the APC cannot win, they should forget about these rerun elections and wait for another time. There is no need creating crisis when the APC is unpopular in Rivers State”.

Wike noted that it is the fraudulent plots of the APC in liaison with the police and INEC that generates tension, which could lead to violence.

“We want free and fair elections .They should allow our people to choose their leaders in peace because nobody will be allowed to rig elections here”, he said.

On the Chokocho-Umuechem-Ozuzu Road, Wike said that the state government was committed to improving the economic fortunes of the Etche people.

He said that the road contract was previously awarded to Hon Ogbonna Nwuke, an APC chieftain who pocketed the money and abandoned the work.

He said: “This is a day of reckoning. This is a time to punish Nwuke, who collected the money for the Chokocho-Umuechem-Ozuzu Road, refused to execute the project, but is now seeking the mandate of the Etche people”.

Wike called on Etche people to vote PDP candidates in the rerun elections as that will help in consolidating the development of the state.

In his address, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Bathuel Iheanyichukwu said that the Chokocho-Umuechem-Ozuzu Road was 18.5 kilometres in length, adding that the road will revive the comatose economy from the area

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, has alerted the nation and the international community of plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to write the results of the forthcoming elections set for 10th December, 2016.

The commissioner accused the Minister for Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and other leaders of the Rivers State branch of the APC of being the masterminds “behind the industrial scale electoral fraud”.

Tam-George revealed that after stalwarts of the APC were apprehended for the illegal printing of result sheets two weeks ago by the Rivers State Police Command; the syndicate has moved its operations to Owerri, Imo State, to avoid detection.

The commissioner said that the Rivers State APC took delivery of 60 brand new Toyota Hilux vans on Monday, 28th November, 2016.

These vehicles, according to the commissioner, would be used by the APC to convey the forged result sheets and other electoral materials to different parts of the state, such as Ogoni, Ikwerre, Isaka in Okrika local government area, among others.

He alleged that the APC was working in close coordination with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tinubu committed to unlocking Nigeria’s potential – Shettima

Published

on

Vice-President Kashim Shettima says President Bola Tinubu is committed to unlocking Nigeria’s full potential and position the country as a leading force on the African continent.

Shettima stated this when he hosted a  delegation from the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, led by its Senior Fellow, Dr Rolf Alter, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja last Wednesday.

He said Nigeria was actively seeking expertise from the global best institutions to enhance policy formulation and implementation, particularly in human capital development.

The Vice-President noted that President Tinubu was determined to elevate Nigeria to its rightful position as a leading force in Africa.

“The current crop of leadership in Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is ready and willing to unleash the full potential of the Nigerian nation on the African continent.

” We are laying the groundwork through strategic reforms, and at the heart of it, is human capital development.”

He described the Hertie School as a valuable partner in the journey.

According to him, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, has track record and institutional knowledge to add value to our policy formulation and delivery, especially in this disruptive age.

Shettima reiterated the government’s priority on upskilling Nigerians, saying ” skills are very important, and with our Human Capital Development (HCD) 2.0 programme.

“We are in a position to unleash the full potential of the Nigerian people by enhancing their capital skills.”

The Vice-President acknowledged the vital support of international development partners in that effort.

” I want to thank the World Bank, the European Union, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and all our partners in that drive to add value to the Nigerian nation,” he maintained.

The Vice-President said human capital development was both an economic imperative and a social necessity.

Shettima assured the delegation of the government’s readiness to deepen cooperation.

” We need the skills and the capacity from your school. The world is now knowledge-driven.

“I wish to implore you to have a very warm and robust partnership with the government and people of Nigeria.”

Shettima further explained recent economic decisions of the government, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms.

“The removal of fuel subsidy, the unification of the exchange rate regime and the revolution in the energy sector are all painful processes, but at the end of the day, the Nigerian people will laugh last.

“President Tinubu is a very modern leader who is willing to take far-reaching, courageous decisions to reposition the Nigerian economy,” he added.

Earlier, Alter, congratulated the Tinubu administration for the successful launch and implementation of the Human Capital Development (HCD) strategy.

The group leader described the development as ambitious and targeted towards the improvement of the lives of the citizens.

He expressed satisfaction with the outcome of his engagements since arriving in the country.

He applauded the zeal, commitment, energy and goodwill observed among stakeholders in the implementation of Nigeria’s HCD programme.

Alter said the Hertie School of Governance would work closely with authorities in Nigeria across different levels to deliver programmes specifically designed to address the unique needs of the country.

He, however, stressed the need for government officials at different levels to be agile and amenable to the dynamics of the evolving world, particularly as Nigeria attempted to successfully accelerate its human capital development aspirations.
