RSG Introduces Fish Farming In Remand Homes

As part of measures to
provide skills and rehabilitate inmates, the Rivers State Government has introduced fish farming to Remand Homes.
The First Lady of the state, Justice Eberechi Suzette Wike made the disclosure through the Commissioner for Agriculture, Barrister Onimim Jack while addressing inmates at the Port Harcourt Remand Home.
She urged the children in the home to ensure that they learn fish farming which was reintroduced as a way of giving them skills.
According to her, the reintroduction of fish farming at the Port Harcourt Remand Home will lead to rehabilitation of ponds in the correction facility.
She said fish farming at the correctional facility will help build the nutrition of inmates as they will produce for their own consumption.
Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike also stated that the Rivers State Government was promoting food security by encouraging young people to embrace agriculture.
Speaking during programmes to mark the 2016 World Food Day organised by the promoters of Port Harcourt International Festival, Justice Nyesom-Wike said that the Wike-led administration has taken measures to improve food production in the state.
The wife of the Rivers State governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture , Mrs Onimim Jack, said with young people participating in agriculture, the state will not experience food shortages.
She said: “We have introduced practical agriculture in our schools across the state. The aim is to ensure that each school with a space has a farm where students will practice agriculture .”
Later at the day- two of the Port Harcourt Food Festival, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike expressed satisfaction that youth in the state are driving food security through projects to encourage food production and appropriate consumption.
In a lecture, Prof Ebiegberi Alogoa said that the Niger Delta has been pivotal to the emergence of several types of cuisines across the country.
Initiator of the Port Harcourt International Food Festival, Mr Kenneth Kalio, said that the festival was aimed at promoting the business aspects of food, the nutritional value and also ensure food security .
Highpoint of the second day of the Port Harcourt Food Festival was the inspection of different food stands by the representative of the wife of the Rivers State governor .
