Forum Canvasses National Polytechnics Commission
The National Forum of Ni
gerian Polytechnics Alumni Association, has called for the establishment of National Polytechnics Commission, to supervise activities of polytechnics in Nigeria. National Chairman of the association, Mr Emmanuel Ojo, made the appeal during a national meeting of the forum in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo.
Ojo said that it was imperative for polytechnics to have a commission that would regulate their activities, just as is the case with universities.
“We are reiterating our demand for the establishment of National Polytechnics Commission.
“The National University Commission supervises universities in the country and National Commission for Colleges of Education supervises colleges of education.
“But only the polytechnics are supervised by the National Board for Technical Education along with Technical and Vocational Colleges,” he noted.
Ojo urged the National Assembly to pass the bill seeking to abolish the dichotomy between degree and higher diploma holders, which had passed first reading in the Senate since August 2014.
The chairman also called for the inclusion of members of the association in the governing councils of federal polytechnics.
He urged the federal government to allow polytechnics in the country to award degrees.
“We are of the opinion that existing polytechnics should be authorized to award degrees as we have always advocated, as is the case in advanced countries.
“In Nigeria, we already have Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic authorized to award degrees though in affiliation with proximate universities,” Ojo said. Earlier, Chairman of Auchi Polytechnic Alumni Association, Mr Victor Okhaimo said the meeting would discuss and proffer solutions to challenges facing polytechnics in the country.
