Lawyer Urges Repeal Of Obnoxious Laws
As part of measures to
address the daunting economic challenge facing the country, a legal luminary, Barrister Emeka Ichoku has canvassed for the repeal of obnoxious laws to enable the various state of the federation explore their inherent economic potentials for sustainable development.
Barrister Ichoku who spoke with The Tide in an exclusive interview faulted the structure of governance in Nigeria which makes the various states of the Federation to depend on Federal allocation for economic survival.
He pointed out that “the various states of the Federation have self-sustaining development potential which can be explored based on comparative economic advantages”, but regretted that such prospect had been hampered by legal and political constraints.
The Port Harcourt-based legal practitioner specifically called for the repeal of laws such as the land Use Act, the Electricity Act among other obnoxious laws, noting that the existence of such obsolete legislations had remained a disincentive to the holistic development of the country.
According to Barr. Ichoku, Nigeria as a country can only obtain its full economic potentials when the states are allowed to develop independently of the Federal Government by exploring its resources and paying taxes to the Federal Government.
He said Nigeria Federal structure though tailored after the United States of America, was yet to practice real fiscal federalism growth of the nation.
Barrister Ichoku also posited that the decline in oil price which had affected Nigeria’s monolithic economy, was evidently a divine way of rousing the sensitivity of government at various levels to invest in other areas of the economy rather than concentrating on oil.
Against the assumption that Government is not a good investor, Barrister Ichoku averred that Government had the right capacity and resources to invest, but attributed the failure of Government in investing to over politicization of the Polity.
He said in the days of Alfred Diete Spiff as Military Governor of Old Rivers State, he established and sustained chains of business enterprises in the state but almost all of such establishments had gone moribund.
Barrister Ichoku however expressed hope in the future of Nigeria, and called on President Muhammadu Buhari, not “to trail in the dust the chances of making, Nigeria a truly great nation”.
