FG To Boost Textiles Sector
The Federal Government
of Nigeria has assured the National Union of Textiles, Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, NUTGWN, that it would do all within its powers to ensure that the challenges militating against the industry were adequately addressed.
The Vice President of the Federation, Prof Yemi Osinbajo made this declaration while addressing the union at the 11th Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Kano.
Osinbajo stated that already the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS) Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), had put machinery in motion to combat smuggling as well as indiscrimate dumping of textile and garments in the Nigerian market.
The Vice President, who was represented by a Permanent Secretary of the Federation, Mr Aminu Bisala, affirmed that the Federal Government was committed to developing infrastructure that would enhance businesses in the country.
He assured that trade facilitation within borders would be given priority and expressed the hope that the Federal Government economic boosters would address trade challenges and provide for the future of Nigerians.
He used the opportunity to call on textile workers to prioritise their skills development and charged them to adhere to global standards for effective competitiveness, for job creation and combat counterfeiting.
“I therefore enjoin you to show commitment in your industry and enhance production capacity and skills, as well as add value to your products in order to compete favourably with legitimate imported garments in the market,” he said.
He assured, saying, “the government is determined in its commitment to diversify the economy through exports promotion and will support you in promoting local patronage of made-in-Nigeria garments.”
He listed inadequate infrastructure and financing, standardisation challenges, lack of access to international markets, smuggling and dumping of used clothes among others as some of the challenges inhibiting the textiles industry development.
