Youth Dev: Ambode Seeks Private Sector Partnership
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, has urged private sector organisations to partner with the state government to sponsor projects for youth learning and development.
Ambode made the call at the opening of the multipurpose Onikan Youth Centre constructed by PZ Cussons Foundation in Lagos on Friday.
He said the construction of the centre was an example of how private sector organisations could complement the efforts of government.
According to him, government alone cannot handle the numerous challenges the society was facing because of the limited resources and the increasing demand for the resources.
“I commend the management of PZ Cusson and I call on other organisations to come up with credible mechanisms and projects to stimulate the society.
“This is the goal of corporate social responsibility, to give back to the society and contribute positively to your host community.
“I also call on the corporate community to always focus on sectors that affect youths in a quest to take our youths off the streets and build our future leaders.
“As a government, we will continue to explore ways to create an enabling environment for your businesses to thrive,’’ he said.
He added that the centre would positively engage young boys and girls and help them to channel their energies toward productive ventures.
“I urge our youths to make good use of this centre for their empowerment and conception of great ideas for human and societal development,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Mr Christo Giannopouslos, Chief Executive Officer, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc., said that they believed in the empowerment and upliftment of the people of their host community.
“Over the years, we have partnered with local communities and the government to focus on education, sustainable portable water and health programmes.
“We are committed to doing business and putting smiles on the faces of the people which informed the construction of the youth centre for leaning and mentoring,’’ he said.
In his remarks, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, urged other corporate organisations to build more recreational facilities for youth development.
Muri-Okunola also urged the youth to adequately maintain the centre and empower themselves.
