Tourism expert seeks review of taxation laws
The immediate past Presi
dent of Hotel Owners Forum Abuja (HOFA), Mr Ekong Onofiok, has called on government to review taxation laws to tackle the multiple taxation challenge in hotels.
Onofiok told newsmen in Abuja last Tuesday, that the laws on taxation needed to be reviewed to meet present day challenges.
“These laws were promulgated in the 1940s, 50s and 60s and they are the laws that the local and state government officials are applying to demand for payments.
“Hoteliers are very impressed with the move by the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, to streamline these laws that result in multiple taxation.
“For example, we are buying signal from DSTV, we are paying copyright owners and we buy our TVs; so what is the purpose of the tax for owning a radio and television.
“This is one example of ‘multiple taxation, hence, the need to review our taxation laws.
Onofiok, who spoke on the issue of guest identification, explained that all members of HOFA demand for proper identification from those who lodge in their hotels.
According to him, Nigeria is the only country where people walk into hotels and stay without proper identification.
He said HOFA, without waiting for any legislation or law, insisted that all guests who lodge in their hotels must present a valid identification.
He said all HOFA member hotels accept the driving licence, international passport, voter’s card or national identification card as valid identification.
“Any of these must be presented before you are allowed to lodge in any HOFA member hotel.
“In the past, people go into hotels with fake names and by morning, the people are gone leaving no trace behind.
“With the collaboration we have with security agencies wherein we report the activities of our hotels to the police on a daily basis, security threats are reduced.
“The police examine the names and addresses of guests, especially foreigners; if you go abroad, your passport is taken from you and kept until you are ready to leave in some countries.
Onofiok also said all the facilities in HOFA member hotels were covered by CCTV cameras.
He said tapes from the CCTV cameras were made available to only authorised personnel and security operatives.
“On the strength of this, the police is able to play back to ascertain a serious crime; all of these measures are to guarantee the safety of our guests,’’ Onofiok said.
