Kaduna Dry Port Campaigns For Patronage
Authorities at the Kaduna
Inland Dry Port said arrangements had been concluded for an awareness campaign for patronage of its services.
Mr Salami Rasaq, Manager, Inland Containers Nigerian Ltd (ICNL) depot at the port, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Kaduna.
Rasaq said the campaign was to encourage the public to utilise the port and ‘’tap from its advantages of convenience, safety and cost effectiveness’’.
He said that the campaign became necessary in view of the low activity at the port.
“In a bid to turn things around, we decided to embark on massive awareness campaign through jingles and sponsorship of radio and television programmes.
‘’This is to enlighten the public on the benefits and advantages of patronising the range of services offered by the port,’’ he said, adding that the campaign would be sustained.
According to him, in spite of its new status as a dry port of origin and final destination, stakeholders are yet to take full advantage of the facility.
Rasaq disclosed that the port had the potential to handle more than 2,000 cargoes in a month, but had not received more than 100 cargoes a month.
He, however, expressed the hope that the recent upgrade of the facility would increase business activities in it.
He explained that the port would now avail freight owners the opportunity to ship their goods directly to Kaduna from any part of the world.
“Those clearing their goods in Lagos and other ports in the country now have the advantage of getting their cargoes delivered directly at the Kaduna dry port,’’ he said.
The port manager said that Kaduna State Government would gain in revenue generation from the port if its patronage improved.
He expressed optimism of improved activities at the port, noting that Kaduna was the largest industrial city in the northern part of the country, with big industries, cutting across petroleum refining, vehicle assembly, chemicals and textiles.
He, therefore, urged the state government, shippers and businessmen in Kaduna and environs to take full advantage of the dry port and tap from its benefits.
He said that the dry port had capacity to handle 29,000 containers annually.
