Traffic Rules: Abuja Transport Office Tasks Road Users
The Federal Capital Terri
tory (FCT) Transportation Secretariat has urged road users in the territory to always obey traffic rules and regulations, to avoid friction with the authorities.
This is contained in a statement signed Mr Ifeanyi Ughamadu, Head, Public Relations of the secretariat, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
Ughamadu condemned the recent protest by operators of painted taxi cabs in the FCT, which according to him, was due to the operators’ frequent flouting of laid down traffic regulations.
“ Federal Capital Territory Administration has observed with dismay the increasing disregard to the FCT Transport Secretariat’s traffic rules and regulations.
“This clear breach usually result to unwarranted brushes with officers of the Road Traffic Services and other law enforcement agents; it is avoidable, if road users can obey the law.’’
Ughamadu said that calls by the protesting taxi drivers for the scrapping of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services was uncalled for as the directorate was set up by law.
“The recent protest by the painted taxi drivers in the FCT demanding for the scrapping of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services is uncalled for.
“This agitation amounts to sheer ignorance of the FCT Road Traffic Act, Cap 548, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (1990)’’.
Ughamadu, who said that the FCT Administration had provided parks and ranks for buses and taxis to pick and discharge passengers, urged taxi drivers to make adequate use of the facilities.
He emphasised that the ban on commercial motorcycles, mini-busses and tricycles was still in place in the FCT and urged road users to obey the rule.
“ Federal Capital Territory Administration has created bus terminals, taxi ranks and bus stops at designated points across the city for bus and taxi operators to pick and discharge their passengers
“The Transportation Secretariat wishes to restate that, only licensed taxi and bus operators are allowed to operate in the Federal Capital Territory.
