Ministry Inaugurates C’ttee On GIS Summit
The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has inaugurated a nine-man Planning Committee for the maiden edition of the National Geographic Information System and Land Information System (GIS/LIS) Summit.
A statement signed by Mrs Grace Osuji on behalf of the ministry, said the committee was inaugurated to accelerate the process of land titling and registration under the ongoing land reforms.
According to the statement, Mr George Ossi, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, while inaugurating the committee yesterday, noted that GIS is a modern universal solution to myriads of challenges confronting the built environment.
Ossi, the statement said, underscored the need to propel change and turnaround in the land, housing and urban development sector.
He charged the committee to synchronize the various systems and formats of the National Council on Lands, Housing and Urban Development’s meeting held in Kano and Akwa Ibom states in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
He said that the formats declared that a national GIS and LIS summit should be organised early in 2015 for placement of existing states and other agencies to operate on the same template.
This, the Permanent Secretary said would facilitate inter-operability.
The statement said the terms of reference of the committee included preparation of concept note for the summit, proposal for the modality, structure and action plan for the summit among others.
“The committee is to identify, engage and interact with any person(s) or organization(s) for the purpose of planning and executing the summit.
“The committee will identify sources of funding and advice on cost implication for the summit, resource persons, participants and other persons critical for the successful hosting of the summit.
“It will undertake and carry out all activities incidental to the successful hosting of the summit and leverage on the expertise of GIS operators across the globe to ensure early hosting of the summit,” Ossi said in the statement.
He expressed the commitment of the management in fulfilling the noble idea conceived two years ago.
According to the statement the committee is chaired by Mrs Margaret Okolo-Ebube of the Department of Lands of the ministry.
Members of the committee are professionals from relevant departments and units in the ministry using GIS and LIS solutions.
