NAFDAC Charges Food Manufacturers On Standard
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called on manufacturers in the food industry to set up hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system in their facilities.
The Agency also urged them to adhere strictly to laid down standards or risk sanction and closure.
The director-General of the Agency, Dr. Paul Orhii sounded the warning in Asaba Delta State during NAFDAC workshop on food safety in collaboration with Utopia training for food industries and selected NAFDAC officials in South South and South East Zones.
Orhii whose paper was entitled, International Food Safety Capacity Building Workshop for industry regulators” said that NAFDAC, being among the 18 top regulatory agencies in the world, will not compromise food safety Gence the training workshop and capacity building for stakeholders.
The Director general who was represented by the Director Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate, Mrs Ogochukwu Manasara further said that the Agency restructuring on 2013 led to the establishment of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate due to the high premium NAFDAC placed on food and warned that failure to adhere to the standard after the workshop will lead to the closure of their investments in the sector.
“Build up your capacity because I cannot joke with food safety. 167 million Nigerians eat food atleast once a day and it will result to unmitigated disaster, if standards are compromised.
“They are food borne diseases and epidemics due to unsatisfactory good hygienic practices (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
“Nobody bothers to adhere to HACCP, this will not be allowed to continue”, he said.
He also said that the government trust is to build up the local industries so that they can compare favourably with the outside world, noting that, the Agency analyses export products free of charge and the recent review of NAFDAC charges did not affect local manufacturers.
A release signed by the Public relations Officer South South Zone of the Agency, Mr. Cyril Monye stated that the workshop was highly interactive.
