Lagos Health Workers Remain Adamant On June 30 Strike
Health workers at the
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute Meta, Lagos, has Friday, insisted that they would go on strike on June 30, following the management’s inability to meet their demands.
The workers, under the aegis of Joint Health Workers Union (JOHESU), resolved to go ahead with the strike as their proposed meeting with the management and board of the hospital was aborted.
Mr Shehu Sulaimon, the FMC Chairman of JOHESU, in an interview with newsmen in Lagos, said that the union had explored all available means to avert the strike.
“We proposed a meeting with the board and the management team, but only the board chairman, Prof. Gbola Adetunji, was present, while all other principal officers were absent.
“We requested for the presence of the Chief Medical Director at the meeting, but we were told that she is on leave and had travelled outside the country.
“We then told the chairman that we could not proceed with the meeting, because we realised that his tenure as the board chairman would soon expire.
“If eventually the board is dissolved, it means that whatever we discussed will not be binding on the incoming board.
“We said, therefore, that there was no point discussing our demands with the chairman alone.
“Then, the chairman got annoyed and left the boardroom. So, we have no choice than to leave too.
“We appeal to the public to mount pressure on the hospital management to meet our demands, to avert the strike,’’ Sulaiman said.
In his reaction, the Director of Corporate Services, Mr Henry Etim, said it was true that the union demanded for the presence of key management staff at the meeting.
“They demanded to have them at the meeting, but the Chief Medical Officer, Mrs Yewande Jinadu, is on her annual leave, as a civil servant.
“She will come back soon. By the time she comes back, everything will be addressed.
“Let us all exercise some patience,” he added.
Our correspondent reports that there has been a lingering crisis between the workers and the management of the institution over alleged anti-worker policies.
The workers are demanding for improved welfare, payment of promotion arrears and a three-month pre-retirement leave.
