BVN: Bank Customers Seek Deadline Extension
As deadline for the expira
tion of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise draws close, bank customers have called for an extension.
Some customers who spoke to our correspondent yesterday in Port Harcourt said because of the large number of customers crowding various branches of banks, the exercise has become very frustrating.
One of the customers, Caroline James, said she had spent two hours at the Ikwerre Road Brach of First City Monument Bank and yet there was no sign of completing the processes.
“I am a civil servant and have not been paid for three months, spending these hours here because of this exercise won’t do me good because I have other things to do to provide food for my family,” James said and appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to consider the importance of the exercise as well as the critical situation faced by civil servants across the nation and extend it by at least one month.
Another customer who spoke to The Tide at the Azikiwe Road branch of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Chief Justice Mpi expressed similar view.
He said, “Look at everywhere, it is like this in all the bank branches in Port Harcourt. The stress is too much and this is not something you can delegate somebody to do for you. I appeal to the Central Bank of Nigeria to extend this exercise.”
To Chidi Okolobia, another customer, “I know that CBN gave a long time for the programme but the reality is that this thing cannot end by this June which is about one week. Let it be extended please.”
An officer of UBA said the Central Bank of Nigeria and other commercial banks gave adequate time for the exercise and blamed the crowd on Nigerian’s attitude of waiting till last minute before taking action on issues.
The bank officer who pleaded anonymity said, “there was no need for the crowd we are experiencing now if from the onset customers had given the exercise the attention it demands.”
According to him, there are calls for extention simply because the deadline is few days away but what I don’t know is if CBN would be able to grant such request.
