Lawmaker Urges Reduction In Kerosene Price
Senator representing
Suthern Senatorial District of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Otu has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to summon up courage and reduce the price of kerosene from the present N130 to N50 per litre.
The lawmaker also called on President Jonathan to ensure the rehabilitation of all the four refineries in the country for the purpose of refining crude as well as encourage private investors to establish refineries in the country.
Otu made the call in Calabar while reacting to the recent reduction of the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol from N97 to N87 per litre.
He commended President for the slash in the pump price, and advised that reducing the price of kerosene will greatly improve the living standards of most Nigerians who depend on it for light, energy and cooking.
“The Presidency should also haste the process of reducing the cost of kerosene from the present N130.00 to N50.00 per litre such that the gesture could improve the living standard of majority of the citizenry who depend upon it as a source of light and energy and for cooking,” he said.
According to him, reduction in the price of kerosene will protect the Eco-system from further destruction as well as conserve nature from the prevailing climate change.
“The reduction in the price of kerosene especially will also protect the Eco-system from further depletion of our forest as fireword and also conserve nature from the prevailing climate change with resultant hazard to health,” he submitted.
On the recent reduction in the pump price PMS, Otu appealed to the President to make strident efforts to cause the petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to enforce the adjusted price of fuel in all filling stations nationwide.
The Lawmakrer argued that the country has the capacity to make all the refineries in the country functional and advised that the Federal Government should identify impediments to refining the products locally and deal with them.
