The Special Adviser
to the President on Food Security, David Ojero, has said that the need to promote growth, transformation and crop utilisation has spurred international interest from the European Union in the agric sector.
The aide, who represented the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. A desina Akonwumi at the 3rd EU-Nigeria Business Forum recently in Lagos said there was a view toward driving a massive agriculture development programme targeted at quelling hunger and malnutrition in Africa.
Ojero attributed the high level of malnutrition in Africa to poor performance of agriculture over the years which was a source of livelihood for majority of the poor.
“There is no nutrition without food, food supplies the nutrients that nourishes our bodis and agriculture supplies the rich and diverse food through a complex network of producers, processors, merchants and business people and consumers” he said.
He, however, noted that agriculture has a key role to play in sustaining and addressing the problem of malnutrition in Africa in general and Nigeria in particular.
According to him, Africa has the potential of producing enough food to check hunger on the continent that could end hunger and malnutrition.
