Maritime Operator Wants Onitsha Port Revived
A Maritime operator, Tony
Anakebe has called on the Minister of Transport, Idris Umar to revive and put into maximum use the Onitsha River Port in Anambra State.
Anakebe made the call in a chat with Maritime reporters in Lagos recently.
He said 60 per cent of the containerised Cargo imported into the country were owned by importers based in South-Eastern Nigeria, and that reviving of the port would enable the importers to take delivery of their consignments with less stress.
“This will help in growing the economy because it a ship berths in Lagos ports, containers can be carried by barges to the hinterlands for the importer to take delivery of his consignment without having to travel to Lagos,’ he said.
According to him, all what the importer needed was to pay for the transfer charges and clear the goods at the Onitsha Rivers Port if it is utilised effectively.
In a related development, an Nnewi based importer, Ifeanyi Obi has also said that importers in the Eastern states of the federation had been waiting endlessly for the Onitsha River Port to become active so that importers could bring in their cargoes directly to the port.
He said the Onitsha port needs to commence operations immediately so that huge sums of money spent by the Federal Government in dredging the Rivers Niger would not be a waste.
It would be recalled that the Onitsha River Port, located in the heart of the commercial city of Anambra State was developed to service importers and other South-Eastern based maritime businessmen to take direct delivery of their cargoes, after the federal government spent the sum of N4.6bn to rehabilitate the port.
The Tide gathered that the port which was commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 is yet to function, as it was meant to enhance timely cargo delivery and bring port facilities close to its target market.
