More Private Car Owners Join Kabu-Kabu Business In PH
Apparently hit by the pre
vailing economic situation in the country, more private car owners have resorted to going commercial with their vehicles soon after the close of work.
A recent investigation by our correpodnent in Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs indicated that there has been an upsurge in the number of private car owners joining in commercial activities.
A taxi driver, Mr Paul Uzoma, who plies the flyover to Rumuola axis of Aba road who spoke to our correspondent said that the development could not be unconnected with the prevailing economic situation in Port Harcourt.
According to him, although in the past such has been the case but the rise was very much evident.
Explaining further, Uzoma said most passengers prefer patronizing the private cars as they were in better condition compared to the regular taxi cabs.
A private car owner Mr Dickson Amadi, who is into the kabu kabu business (as they are popularly called) who spoke to our correspondent said it was necessary for him to do so.
He said with most petrol stations dispensing fuel on adjusted metres, it would be unreasonable for him to hide under the cloak of a car owner and suffer.
According to him, gone were the days when private owners ignored the chance of making extra money to at least meet some domestic expences.
Bertrand Igwe drives a Lexus jeep and at the close of work uses it to convey passengers travelling through his route.
Igwe, who lives at Rukpoku community in the Obio/Akpor local government area of the state in a chat with our correspondent said at the close of work, he picks passengers at Mile one.
He explained that he charges according to how the commercial bus drivers do even as he said the money he realizes “could be used in buying fuel and other domestic necessities.”
But for Bitrus Onyema, another private can owner, he wakes as early as 5am and looks for passengers till 7am before reporting for duty by 8.00am.
According to Onyema, as soon as he closes work by 4pm, he would be on the road again.
He said so long as his papers were in order, he runs uptil 10-11pm even as he said on a good day “he makes as much as N7000-N10,000”.
