Railway Workers Task FG On Transport Policy
The Nigeria Union of Railway Workers has asked the Federal Government to initiate an integrated transport policy that will connect the airports, seaports and roads by rail for effective national socio-economic development.
The President- General of the Union, Mr. Raphael Okoro, said this during the union’s 21st National Executive Council Meeting held in Lagos.
The Tide source reports that the theme of the meeting is: Feasible and Sustainable Integrated Transport Policy: A must for the Development of Rail Transport System.
Okoro said that the relevance of transport, as the society became more complex, necessitated the need for modern transports and freight distribution system that would connect airports, railways, seaports and roads.
He said, “Transport is becoming more relevant as the society becomes more complex and that is one of the reasons modern transports and freight distribution system all over the world is being redefined through integrated transport policy.
“This inclusive transport system alone can guarantee a trusted, reliable, cost-effective and prompt transports system which would aid the realisation of the socio-economic development of the nation. The urgent need for a serious and workable transport policy that will ensure effective integration of all modes of transportation cannot be overemphasised.”
Okoro said that most modes of transportation in the country operated independently of one another.
“It is important to note that all the various modes of transports in Nigeria still exist in non-coordinated pattern that makes each mode so operationally independent of the other,” he said.
The NUR president urged the government to address all the constraints and challenges of the rail transport mode to realise its socio-economic transformation agenda.
