Sale of Books Drops In Asaba
Book sellers in Asaba
Delta State and environs are experiencing very low patronage,
A check at the Ogbe Ogonogo Market and some bookshops in Asaba, revealed that parents hardly patronise them due to a new policy by private schools in the state, which makes it compulsory to buy books from the schools.
One of the book sellers, Mr Eze Nwamuo, said that the policy had affected the business, as parents no longer patronise bookshops as was the practice at the beginning of new academic sessions.
According to him, the prices of the books supplied by the schools are even higher than what is obtained in the open market.
Another book seller, Mr Okafor Nnadi, said that patronage had dropped, warning that if the situation persisted, many bookshops in the state would fold up.“The schools have now turned into bookshops and I wonder whether it will not have a negative impact on the school system,” she said.
A parent, Mrs Awele Ufuani complained that the private schools now charge parents for books every session.
Ufuani described the situation as “exploitative”, noting that textbooks used in the schools were changed every year to prevent the children from passing them to their junior ones.
Another parent, Mrs Okonofua Ediri, said that she could not remember the last time she went to a bookshop to buy books for her children, as the schools now supply them.
Ediri urged the schools to give parents the choice of whether to buy the books from them or in the open market.
Contacted, the Headmistress of Epic International School, Asaba, Ijeoma Ogoegbulem, said that the policy was to ensure uniformity in the books used in the school.
She said that most parents ended up buying different brands of books to the ones specified by the schools.
Ogoegbulem also said that the policy would put those selling pirated books out of business, as majority of the schools purchase the books directly from the original publishers.
On her part, Miss Chika Obi, a staff of Lumen Christie Primary School Asaba, also defended the action taken by the schools, saying it was in the best interest of the parents.
