Coach Urges NSC To Revive Boxing

Published

on

David Amade, the Presi
dent, Nigeria Boxing Coaches Association, on Sunday urged the National Sports Commission (NSC), to revive the lost glory of boxing in the country.
Amade told newsmen in Lagos that the commission should bankroll a national boxing competition to produce boxer that would restore the lost glory days of the sport.
According to him, the sport has in the past delivered medals to the country at major international competitions prior to its decline.
“The neglect of boxing by government has been responsible for the loss of its glory. It has always been a source of medals for the country
“In fact, the first three Olympic medals came from boxing. But one cannot imagine why the sport appears to have been abandoned.
“It will be good for the government to revive the sport through regular sponsorship of competitions as well as extending motivation to boxers as the country has great talents in the sport.’’
According to the president, the strength of many youths in the country can be positively channelled into the sport to make them productive.
Amade commended the board of the Nigeria Amateur Boxing Federation for seeking the cooperation of coaches in its activities.
He urged the board to extend its sponsorship drive to corporate bodies and public spirited individuals.
He said that the boxers would need to have not less than four to five competitions annually to raise world class boxers.
“Motivation is the key to get the best in any person. Currently, boxers are poorly motivated and this has discouraged many talents,’’ he said.
Nigeria won its first Olympic medal through late Nojeem Maiyegun, who won a bronze medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic in light middleweight class.
Nigeria also won another bronze in the 1972 Munich Games through Issac Ikhuoria in the light heavyweight class.
Peter Konyegwachia won silver for Nigeria at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic in the feather weight class, while David Izonritei (heavyweight) and Richard Igbineghu (Super heavyweight) won silver each at the Barcelona Games.

Published

on

Coach Gbenga Ogunbote and 3SC can heave a sigh of relief after ending their four-game winless run in the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Plateau United in Ibadan on Wednesday, Tidesports source reports.
The Oluyole Warriors have struggled to get results at home this season, and they found themselves behind after 29 minutes against their visitors in the match-day 11 encounter.
Samuel Ayanrinde, however, stepped up for Ogunbote’s side again, equalising before halftime, before putting them ahead minutes into the second half.
Defender Ghali Falke added the third for 3SC in the 59th minute, but there was still enough time for Plateau United to pull one back as the game ended 3-2. The result saw Plateau United drop to fourth on the table while 3SC moved up to seventh.
Meanwhile, there will be no change in the top-two as Group A leaders Bendel Insurance were also forced to a 1-1 draw by second-place Akwa United in Benin City.
In-form striker Osarenkhoe Imade was in the right place at the right time to poke home the lead for the Benin Arsenal and his eighth goal of the season inside two minutes, but the Promise Keepers levelled matters on the half hour mark through Cyril Olisema.
Elsewhere in Aba, Enyimba failed to close the gap on the top two teams as they dropped points at home for the second game running in their 1-1 draw against Nasarawa United.
League top scorer Emeka Obioma found the back of the net from the spot again to give Enyimba the lead and take his tally to nine, but the Elephants were undone by an Emmanuel Ogbole’s 76th minute equaliser. They, however, managed to leapfrog into third place, thanks to 3SC’s defeat of Plateau United in Ibadan.
