FG Spends N919.5m On SURE-P In North-West
The Federal Government has spent N919.5 million on the Subsidy Reinvestment and Employment Programme (SURE-P) in the North West, Minister for Labour and Productivity, Mr Emeka Wogu, has said.
Wogu said this recently in Kaduna when he paid a courtesy call on Gov. Mukhtar Yero.
The minister was in the state as part of the ministry’s sensitisation and appraisal of Community Services, Women and Youths Employment (CSWYE) projects in the zone.
Wogu disclosed that 21,000 women, youth and physically challenged persons had so far benefited from the program in the zone.
“In the entire North West a total of 21,000 women, youths and persons with disabilities are benefiting from the project and a total of N919, 509, 500 has been spent in the geopolitical zone from this project alone.”
According to him, the Kano Maiduguri road dualisation, being implemented with the funds, is 47.2 per cent complete, while the Abuja-Kaduna rail line is also ongoing.
He added that under the SURE-P, 1,824 health workers had been deployed to villages in four geographical zones of the country.
Wogu commended the state government for executing various projects under the SURE-P which have direct impact on the people.
“The project has recorded the recruitment of 3,000 beneficiaries under the first ramp-up made of 2,200 males and 800 females, including 488 persons with disabilities.
“These beneficiaries are engaged in 120 service sites spread across the 23 LGAs, 352 wards and 240 communities in Kaduna state.”
He stressed the need for synergy between all implementing agencies to ensure its success.
Responding, Yero said the state government had constituted a committee to investigate the allocation of SURE-P funds.
According to him, 3, 450 women and youths from the 23 local government areas of the state have been trained in various skills in 2012 under the programme, adding that the target was to engage 6,000 beneficiaries.
The governor also said 700 tricycles, 40 taxi cabs, 35 18-seater buses and 15 long buses were allocated to beneficiaries.
