FCT, Four States Record Highest Accidents, Deaths
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that four states, Bauchi, Kogi, Kaduna and Delta, recorded the highest number of road accidents and deaths in 2012 and the first quarter of 2013.
The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the commission, Mr Osita Chidoka, disclosed this when he inspected a trauma centre under construction at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Chidoka said the commission was partnering with the governors of the affected states and the Minister of the FCT to improve on road traffic safety in their areas.
He commended the National Hospital for setting up the trauma centre with a landing space for air ambulance, and described it as a pride of place in the nation’s health architecture.
The Corps Marshal said that when completed, the centre would add value to FRSC’s drive for prompt medical care for road crash victims and rescue services in the country.
He said the commission had acquired and distributed 3,000 closed user group (CUG) telephones to its management team and field operatives as well as all federal medical centres across the country.
The corps marshal said the move was to ensure seamless interface and prompt attention to road crash victims, especially those with trauma cases.
Chidoka also said the commission had acquired 57 ambulances and established 84 functional road side clinics across the country as part of measures to address road crash-related issues.
“The corps will partner with the National Hospital on the training of FRSC medical personnel on contemporary global best practices on trauma care,’’ he said.
Chidoka said that the commission was making efforts to get insurance companies to dedicate part of the funds generated from third party holders to alleviate the plight of road crash victims.
Responding, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Bello Shehu, said the 50-bed centre would be completed in September, and would be manned by specialists in trauma cases.
Other hospitals with trauma centres in the country include Danfodio Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, and the Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, Abuja.
