LG Tasks FG On Water Project Completion
Residents of Agbede community in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo have appealed to the Federal Government to complete the damming of River Akele to end the age-long water scarcity in the community.
Some residents, who spoke on the issue, lamented that non- completion of the project that was started over a decade ago contributed largely to the water problem in the area.
They said that a project that was about 70 per cent completed should not have been abandoned. A 20 litre jerry can sells for between N50 and N60.
According to a resident, Bashiru Momoh, the people in this community, which is about the second largest clan in the local government only, have a moment of respite during the raining season.
“Once the rains are gone, we spend so much on water. “With the hard time, this is becoming so unbearable, especially when you consider that the major inhabitants are only peasant farmers.
“We are in serious need of help and we pray that this comes soon,’’ he stated.
Another resident, Alhaji Mohammed Umoru, called for completion of the project, saying it was a shame that a project so much resources and time had been expended on, was abandoned.
Umoru noted that the community had a difficult terrain, adding that this had made the community to rely solely on the Federal Government to complete the dam “which we believe will end our long time suffering.
“Since 1981, several individuals, organisations and, even the government, had at different times tried to sink borehole but it did not work out because of the terrain. “We beg for this dam to be completed because a lot has gone into it to be left uncompleted at this stage,’’ Umoru said.
