Bayelsa, Canada Sign MoU On Teachers Training
Bayelsa Government on Monday in Yenagoa signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Canadian Government to promote effective teaching in schools.
The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Chris Cooter, and the Commissioner for Education, Mr Salo Adikumo witnessed the event.
Governor Seriake Dickson, said the MoU became imperative in view of the falling standard of education in the state and the country in general.
Dickson described teachers as the most important stakeholders in education sector, saying his administration would continue to give priority to training and retraining of teachers.
He said the state College of Education in Sagbama local government area would take off soon with assistance from its Canadian partners.
“We are investing heavily in the College of Education, and I have just been informed that JAMB has sent a list of about 5,000 students to the institution.
“We are working hard to also build a vocational training school to open up channels for those who are talented in other ways than academics,” Dickson said.
The governor said the partnership with the Canadian government would go a long way in imparting the requisite skills and expertise in teachers.
“We are here to sign a Memorandum of Understanding by which some experts in this sector from your country are expected to work with us,’’ he said.
In his remarks, Cooter expressed optimism that the partnership would serve its purpose and also help to open other windows of opportunities.
He lauded the governor’s vision and passion for education, and assured that the Canadian partners would bring to bear their technical expertise on the training programme.
He added that the cooperation would further promote Nigeria-Canada bilateral relationship.
